Thomas Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I do a lot of pest proofing homes here in the states, those things look like giant dollar signs to me. can I get a few breeders?;-)
dblones Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 » I f***ing hate camel spiders, hell I hate most things in Iraq Well if you remember, even those little bastards that hauled ass across our feet while we were smoking stogies made me nervous...I think that is the first time I logged a 7ft vertical jump onto that platform.
Dr.G Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 » Is that one bug or two? Either way... I'd drop dead if I saw one near me. I think it's just the one, but was in the process of molting its exoskeleton. These guys have the largest mandible(jaw)-to-body ratio in the whole animals kingdom... Food for thought.... ! :-D :-D George
Hugomarink Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 Yeah, I've seen that pic and others of the camel spiders. Pretty horrifying. So just how common is it to come across those things in Iraq? Do they generally avoid humans or will you wake up with one in your sleeping bag if you're not careful?
jadawin Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 That pic of the camel spider is a little misleading, with the guy standing behind messing up the scale of that picture. THey are freaky as hell looking, but only grow to about a 5 inch leg span. That is still grossly large, but not as large as they look in the pictures. From what ive read, they can run about 10mph.
Jay Hemingway Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 oh hellz no!!!!!!! screw the spider in the video and that camel thing!!!! i don't mess with none of those demon creatures!! they are demons on earth, think about it...if they were like 2 feet tall, they would be like demons from the gates of hell! haaa i hate them, get it away from me! » they are not acutally spiders, they are an insect with a mandible jaw » allowing you to hear crunching noises when they eat other insects. why are they not spiders?
dblones Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 » why are they not spiders? here is a great link that covers all about camel spiders to include myths etc. http://www.badspiderbites.com/camel-spider/ I saw quite a few little ones in Iraq. They tend to stay in really dirty areas similar to rats (from my experience only). The largest that I have come across were in Egypt. I had a couple that I thought were chasing me, again because of the shadow thing that you read. But needless to say when those bastards scream and run into your shadown F**KIT!!! Even now I get the shakes thinking about it.
JMH Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 sweet mother of christ, i can feel things crawling all over me thanks to looking at those pictures.

Guest Warren Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 » Sounds like you guys have many nasty spiders down there. » » Note to self: Cancel next year's trip to Australia. » » Does NZ have similar gigantic nasty spiders? No not at all , just giant Maori's with machete's Again. Their women are gorgeous though Visit , I dare you.
