newbie2007 Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Please forgive the truly newbie question, but... What is most commonly done about the dark-foul-sour after-taste that usually follows a cigar? I have tried different beverages (libations!) with them, and that seems to REDUCE, but not ELIMINATE such after-taste. I have also tried not consuming the entire cigar; letting it dwindle somewhere beyond the half-way point so as not to go down to the literally "bitter end." All to no avail. Is this just something that "real men" just tolerate? Ignore? Eventually don't notice? Suggestions?
Professor Twain Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Several suggestions: 1. Smoke better cigars. 2. Be sure to purge occasionally, that is, blow smoke forward through the cigar to get rid of the gasses that can build up. 3. Try not to get the head of the cigar too wet, that allows tars to build up in the head. Sometimes I will take a second clip if the head is too wet, it is amazing how this will refresh the taste of the cigar. I follow the above and never have a bad after taste. Hope this helps.

n2advnture Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 » I have also tried not consuming the entire cigar; letting it dwindle » somewhere beyond the half-way point so as not to go down to the literally » "bitter end." Try smoking SLOWER! Most people smoke too quickly IMHO. Smoking too fast can make a cigar too hot which causes it to become harsh & bitter. The typical "rule" is wait at least 1 minute between draws. Additionally, thinner ring gauges should be "sipped" and not drawn on heavily. I hope this helps ~Mark
Colt45 Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 » Please forgive the truly newbie question, but... » » What is most commonly done about the dark-foul-sour after-taste that » usually follows a cigar? I am going to assume, given your name, you have not been smoking cigars all that long. In addition to the advice already given, I'd add that it can simply be something you have to get used to. After time, you should adjust to the sensation. If you drink, think about the first times you drank beer or wine. Having said that, a truly foul cigar will leave always leave a foul aftertaste.
Claudius Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 » What is most commonly done about the dark-foul-sour after-taste that » usually follows a cigar? Dark, foul, sour?! What the **** did you smoke? :-| I had an acidic, metallic, maybe sour taste in my mouth once. That was after I smoked half an inch of a non-Cuban cigar Tom forced me to smoke. Davidoff Millenium Blend Robusto or some crap like that. Tastes like that when you smoke it, too.
tigger Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I don't think you'll find a way to completely eliminate the aftertaste, but there's some good advice above, I think. Also, I've found that drinking citrus juice or eating peanut butter can cut it some.
Matthew Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Good comments, all. To me, a poor cigar (NC) can leave me with a nasty "after taste", but a good cigar has an excellent "finish".
soltino Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 » What is most commonly done about the dark-foul-sour after-taste that » usually follows a cigar? » I only started smoking cigars last year and had a similar experience. I found that by smoking slower (1 min or so between puffs) I not only enjoyed the cigar more, but also did not get the build up of tar that I was previously experiencing... and that tar tastes exactly as you suggest - dark, foul and sour! Yuck. Also, as Prof Twain suggests, if you do start getting a tar buildup just clip the cigar again slightly and it will take that 'orrible flavour away :-)
Guest Warren Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Over here in Australia we find that if you lick the bottom of a Cockatoo cage that you appreciate the after taste of a bad cigar more. Or that could just be me :-D
jdbrown Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Claudius, I was gifted that same Davidoff recently and pitched after two minutes. Awful finish! They stink!

Van55 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I agree with those who seem to be astounded by your question. One of the characteristics of Cuban cigars that I have found is that, unlike most non-Cubans, I don't feel a compelling need to brush my teeth and gargle after smoking them. Be sure you are smoking genuine Cuban cigars and follow the advice of Professor Twain and n2adventure above.

Or if you are smoking genuine Havana's and you are having this sensation you can do one of two things. 1) keep smoking until you do not experience this sensation 2) Quit while you are ahead. Enjoy the ride! DC
Miami101 Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 What are you smoking.......the tatse in my mouth is great.............
gostgost Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Hey 2007, your not smoking a cigarette so don't draw it like cigarette and let the cigar rest between draws 1 to 1.5 minutes if that fails to clear up the problem tell us what your smoking. Dave.

Taino Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I've found out that cigars with relatively higher RH live less aftertaste than cigars kept at 60-65%
