Point me in the right direction please. Both good. Dip#4 maybe just a bit lighter in strength, in my opinion. but both taste very good.
Professor Twain Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Both great, different. Get a half box of each, or a full box of one and a fiver of the other. Expand your horizons. Hell, get a FULL box of each. You only live once.
Colt45 Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 I am a fan of the Montecristo No.4, but have not tried the Diplomaticos. I was going to try some fairly recently, but went for something a bit smaller (minutos) instead. Based on some excellent reviews here of the Dip 4, I would not hesitate to give them a try. If funds are not an issue, I agree with just going for a box of each. If not, try a handful of each. If you do go the sampler route and have not already tried them, I'd be remiss not to mention the Bolivar PC and Por Larranaga PC. Whatever you choose, I hope you'll let us know your thoughts after you've tried them.
aavkk Posted January 2, 2008 Author Posted January 2, 2008 thanks for your input guys. I have a cab of the PLPC's and love em but havent tried the dip 4, monte 4, or the boli pc. i guess ill buy 4 or 5 of each and see how they smoke. Thanks.

VigorishSLC Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 I think I read in MRN that Diplomaticos was originally marketed to the French, as they prefer milder smokes. It has been said that the Dip flavor profile is essentially a milder Monte. I'm not sure that I completely agree with this; I have both in stock and consistently prefer the Diplomaticos.
aavkk Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 Interesting, so are you saying that they are consistently more full in body with a similar flavor profile than the monte or just a different flavor profile altogether?
shrink Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 IMO, there is no comparison between the flavor profiles of the Monte and Diplomatico. Other than they are both Cuban tobacco. If I wanted to try a Dip, I wouldn't start with the #4. I'd try to get a box of the early 2006 #3's. They're around. What a great smoke. Really rich flavors of sweet paprika spice, with cocoa and citrus. Ripe and ready to enjoy right now! The 2006 Monte #4's are strong, bittersweet coffee with some peppery spice. Good, but mine still need some humidor time to show at their best.

AA, I've been going the route of ordering samples of various smaller sizes for the colder weather. Although I haven't tried either of the #4's you've mentioned I did try 3 of the Dip #5 and all were very tightly rolled, the Dip #3's I have are amazing and I'll be looking for these while in Havana next week and I do like the Dip#2. If you decide to go the sampler route for cold weather smokes I would consider also looking at Punch PC, RASCC and Boli CJ these were new to me and Lisa also included the box codes so I had an idea on how fresh they were. I'm now confident in buying boxes or cabs of many and also have dropped some from the shopping list.
Wiley Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 My experience with the Diplo #4 is that they are very inconsistent, but the truly great ones make it worthwhile, at least for me.
Colt45 Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 » AA, » I've been going the route of ordering samples of various smaller sizes for » the colder weather. Aavkk, If you do go for some smaller cigars as well, maybe give the Montecristo No.5 a shot - I find it to be quite like the No.4, but in a smaller package. The '06s I've tried were as Shrink described the No.4 - for me, little monsters that took time to tame. Sorry to throw another iron in the fire P.S. I also wholeheartedly concur with the Bolivar Coronas Junior!
