broozer
well, i like this line alot, but i think that the gran corona is the best in the line. oddly enough it's the one that got **** canned last fall. i have been smoking through a box of '04 GC's and they are very good. my '02's are resting quietly until a later date. i also have a box of coronas, that i got from you rob, from 10/06. i believe they are much much too young to be smoking right now and i'm not gonna smoke any more of my coronas for another year. i wouldn't advise smoking another one of yours until next fall either or you'll most likely just be dissappointed again. my '02 imperials are very good as well. so well, that after a year they're almost gone. only had one panetela, so i really can't comment on that one too much. i have seen some online for sale from the mid to late 90's, but i can't afford them. if i could i'd damn sure buy a box or 5. :-D bruce
El Presidente
Bruce...what flavour profile do you get form these that rings your bell? I know you like Vegueros and thse follow a similar profile from what I can see. Also similarities to LGC Moedaille d'Or no 2. I wonder if it is just me and lack of appreciation for the blend. anacostiakat
I have only smoked one of this line. The Imperiales that was gifted to me. But that was probably in early '06. My recollection is pretty much the same in that it was a good cigar but not one that I would rush to buy. To each their own. . .
Professor Twain
This cigar has become one of my favorites for when I want something mild and pleasant, something that will help me relax, a cigar that does not have complexity but that to me has a nice sweet creamy vanilla taste. It reminds me of a cream soda. I smoked through most of a box of 05s pretty quickly, and I have a box in my Online Cigar Locker, March 07. (Hey Lisa, when do I get my pics?) I have not yet written up a review of these, maybe I will.
El Presidente
» I have not yet written up a review of these, maybe I will. Please do PT. I am not writing the line off in any way. I am just trying to explore the assets that people attribute to it and hopefully experience them myself.
El Presidente
Quai D’Orsay Corona POS DIC 06 I know that there are members who really enjoy the QD line. I have generally been luke warm. When I think about QD I think OK cigars but they lack complexity and excitement. To me it is a line which struggles with identity. Mild to medium in body without the complexity of Juan Lopez or La Gloria Cubana. I have had the occasional very good Corona Claro and Imperiales which have resonated on the palate with a grassy, creaminess but included just an edge of marmalade which made a world of difference to the cigar. I continually go back to Quai D’Orsay looking almost pleading for that “edge” but in the main I have been disappointed. This morning I reached for a Quai D’Orsay Corona POS DIC 06 in an effort yet again search for the Holy Grail. The corona looks like most Quai D’Orsay Corona’s. Colorado claro wrapper, with a band which you would swear has been designed by counterfeiters. The cigar looks understated. It is a prim and proper librarian with white blouse buttoned to the neck. Visually the cigar gives nothing away about how it will perform. Yet, the aroma is enticing, leather, sweet spice and tobacco. Construction is good. Clipped the cap and the draw is immaculate with slight creamy sweetness on the tongue joined with long dry grass stalks. Gently torched the foot and I was welcomed by soft dry grass and cream flavours mixed with understated tobacco. Nice. No pepper spices to speak of just a mellow controlled delivery of softer nuances. The smoke is white and plentiful and the aroma quite perfumed. The body is strictly mild medium but there is weight on the palate and a viscous coating of the tongue which is almost minerally in nature. I sense a slight sourness to the cigar which is not off putting but takes a little away from the dry grass stalks and cream. Some very light milk coffee coming into play. The cigar has really not changed in flavour or body throughout the first third. It has started well but it needs now to show another dimension or suffer the label of being boring and nondescript. The second third is a disappointment. The grassy, milk coffee and cream flavours which were enjoyable in the opening are becoming strained and confused. The sourness is increasing yet still not off putting. Body is still light medium. Right now this cigar lacks a critical element. It is on the cusp of being a very good cigar but it needs to showcase some sweetness….a marmalade or citrus peel in order to provide contrast and highlight. It fails to do so and hence leaves me wondering …..again….if my palate simply cannot grasp the subtle complexities of Quai D’Orsay. The last third follows the second. I haven’t been this bored since I went to the Pen convention. Don’t get me wrong…it is a “nice” cigar. You won’t pitch it, but you are unlikely to order three boxes either. With an inch and a half to go I have found that the Librarian really has nothing under that blouse. In fact she is so straight laced that after a 30 minute conversation about the weather and the pro’s and con’s of the Dewey decimal filing system, I am looking for ways to leave politely. I finished the Quai D’Orsay Corona. It was nice. My dentist is also a nice guy but I won’t be inviting him over any time soon. 84/100 3/6 Smokerings. PS…I would love members impressions or the Quai D’Orsay line. Am I a philistine? Ok…..yes I am….. but what do you get for Quai D’Orsay and do you get those features you like consistently or is it akin to panning for Gold?
