After my insipid Cohiba Siglo II the other week I decided to follow up with another Cohiba review.

As I had not yet lit up a Maduro 5 Magico and seems im not the only one, I thought I'd help out and give a perspective on the less spoken of Maduro5 Release.

Cigar Mood: 6. Not craving one, but suitably in the mood.

Ambient Conditions: Early evening about 18degC, low humidity.

Drink: Chilled Vodka.

THE CIGAR

Construction: Superb, flawless, and beautiful.

Pre Light Aroma: Vanilla scented coffee.

Pre Light Draw: Overly loose.

The initial draws from this Magico's were.... Magical, Smooth rich fruit with a pleasant sharp yet restrained mocha coffee note. Lush and ample smoke engulfs my mouth through the very loose draw. I will punch instead of clip my next Magico as this pudgy little man is being robbed of showing his best notes from a wind tunnel throat.

The aroma right from the get go is spectacular, brilliant, unique but intoxicating. Underlying spice note joins the mocha coffee in a pure, crisp and clean dance over my taste buds in a perfect melding of modern Havana.

Chocolate is coming to the fore now just over an inch in, the luxurious gentle spice is its perfect companion. They are seducing me like a conniving high school drama queen and im going to ask them to the dance as a result.

Mild to med strength... light to medium body for me overall. Brilliant level of smoke considering the draw.

And on I go, greeted now by a dusty wood element that arrives with a soft and elegant entrance. Not in your face, just elegant and adding yet another layer of intrigue and class to the already brilliant flavour profile. Further on and hints of supple Italian leather spring into action, not replacing the beautiful elements it is joining but adding to them, rounding them off as it were.

I am almost gaining an erection now. This is a brilliant new habano, if your wife left because you spend every spare moment you had on a box of these... I'd pack her bag and wave goodbye while smoking one.

Chocolate shines to the fore, the other flavours applauding beside it as it takes centre stage. Chocolate asks the immaculate Cedar/Dusty Wood note to join the chorus, it does so holding a sensual spice note in its hand. Spice being a cheeky little bugger calls leather to join them, amazing! Perfect!

This is modern Havana shining and offering a unique option when standing at the humidor.

The stage is rudely crashed by earth and this young earth note brings a dreaded symphony wrecker in bitterness out with him. The brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable notes being sung by some of my favourites decide to fight it out for my attention.

I try desperately to break them up with a slight purge and a slow down of the draw. But it is in vein as the final in and a half sees these unwanted visitors of youth to the fore for the final inch and a half.

With some good rest and training the amazing elements of this surprisingly great smoke will one day defeat the 'stage crashers' and see this smoke be one of the best, if not the best sub hour smokes available.

Give them another year and the fight will already be much closer to a desired result.

89-90 points already. And a great 'change up' in any smoking rotation for mine.

The first 30-35 minutes of this Cigar are already well worth lighting one up for. Don’t hold back on sampling these regularly!

I am almost gaining an erection now.

I sure hope that it's longer than a Magicos, or you're gonna need to See-Alice, my man.

Thanks for the review, Smoooooth...

Nice work Smooth :ok:

Bloody distinctive aren't they :-) I prefer the Genios for the fuller body but it is in essence a chocolate stick as is the Magicos.

They have a home in my personal humidor.

I tried to like these..IMO the Genios were the best...but they just don't seem to have any soul . Chocolate..yeah its there but maybe I am just not used to the lack of the typical Cuban flavors that I enjoy. Smoked my last Magicos last weekend and truthfully I couldn't wait to fire up something with more kick to it. I will try the Mad 5's again in another year and see what happens.

I understand your point of view there... however...

I think the only way to enjoy a Maduro5 is to think of them as a unique 'change-up' to normal Cuban flavours.

If you light any Maduro5 expecting old style cuba, you wont even get the slightest bit of satisfaction. The satisfaction comes from smoking these by virtue of their light, complex and unique flavour profile. I would also say its best to smoke one earlier in the day... :-)

Timing is crucial with these I feel.

I agree Smooth...excellent review too. Its just a personal preference thing I guess. I will probably have some in the humi at a later date for a change of pace. Its a delicate flavored cigar and it's a winner in that respect. Sharp contrast to the rest of the Habanos line. Maybe with a few years on them they will gain some intensity.

Amen to that...

I normally find something that lets me know i've had a cigar in terms of flavour (like your good self) more satisfying.

Liked the review, too. Very..uh... very.

Thanks again, Andre for that wonderful selection last night. It was good seeing everyone again.
