El Presidente Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 After a lacklustre RAG Friday Lunchtime I fired up an 06 PSS1. What a magnificent cigar. One of the top 10 I have smoked this year. If you have one at home smoke one over the weekend and I will amoke another Monday morning for review purposes. Looking forward to comparing notes :-)

Of course, the reason for the shock is that the SS#1 has a reputation for being a full-bodied, tannic cigar that needs anywhere from 3-6 years to tame it's leathery soul. IME, 'young' ones weren't really smokeable, except to guage their aging potential. This revolution in aged filler has got to end. It's ruining the mystique and air of exclusivity surrounding Cuban cigars... that only collectors and aficianados can appreciate them, they have to be aged for years before they're approachable, etc. etc. What is the world coming to?

I'm all for cigars that don't require eons to reach their full potential - maybe a modest time to fully integrate. What I would not want to forfeit would be cigars that are long lived - that is, will not lose flavor if left for a few years. I know there are some who enjoy the hobby aspect of collecting and aging, but I'd love to be able to get them, put them aside for a few months, then smoke them at their full flavored best.

Ken Gargett Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 » Thank God i really am getting sick of this aging crap. » » Open and smoke the sticks right out of the box thats what i like to » hear.;-) min ron nee would be having kittens at the very thought. i love his book but it does seem that if you start buying cigars any time soon then you'll be lucky to be able to smoke them in your lifetime. that said, more and more, i think he has something, though i would work on a much shorter time frame, say 3 to 10 years. i really do think that a few years so often makes a great improvement. the only way i can see around this is stocking the humidor to the extent that allows a few boxes to age enough while smoking others. then get the rotation going (all no doubt music to rob's ears but i can't see any way around it).
88keys Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Couldn't agree more with everybody. I'm constantly looking for ways to buy stuff that's ready. If cigars like PSS1 are already excellent after a year, and they're still readily available, that's a great thing.

If it's too good, I might just have to grab a cab.

Looking forward to more tasting notes. I would very much like to know this as well. Smoked a SS#1-OCT03 yesterday and it was sweet and balanced from the first draw to the last. Could a fresh one really top that?

Could a » fresh one really top that? I would say that ultimately it's a matter of preference. I've been surprised so many times that my surpriser is busted. You always never know is my mantra now!! P.S. For sh&ts & giggles I threw in one on my recent order. I hope it is at least from '06! :-P
