As your review progressed, I could tell from your tone that this was something special. The original Hoyo Piramides were one of my very favorite EL's. I wish I hadn't saved a box now, since they were so deliciously spicy when young. At this time, they are flavorful, but more subdued, and lack the adolescent 'attitude' that made 'em so good.

I won't make the same mistake with the Regalos. Count me in!

I've been waiting for the Hoyo LE release this year with alot of anticipation. I'm a sucker for Hoyos and recently I've tried to get a hold of some of the previous limitadas (i.e. piramides and epicure especials), but the price has risen astronomically: USD 900 a box. This time, I'm not letting the Regalos pass me by!

Rob: Thanks for the great review. One question - could you compare/contrast the regalos with the epicure especial 2004 LE?

» The wrappers don't look too great. Not uniform, rough and veiny :-(

Agreed. Also, the 1st and 3rd cigar look larger than the 2nd , 4th and 5th. The 3rd from the right has a green bottom... I like the 2nd from the right, though :-) All in all, if I saw this box in a shop, I wouldnt buy it.

That is why it is my box. To be honest I tend to smoke the Ugly ducklings. If I don't like them then I recommend the balance 24 highly to Ken next time he is in ;-)

Rob, I second the earlier question...

How do these compare to the 2004 Hoyo EL's? I have a few of them left...they're smokin' great right now.

They have some sweet profile similarities but the Hoyo Regalos do not have that generic EL "taste profile" which is predominant at the initial release (young).

I got my box in Monday morning and shared them with three friends yesterday afternoon for a "mini herf".

All four of us really enjoyed them, but everyone pointed out that the wrappers are very rough, or "rustic" as one commented. The wrapper didn't take away from the experience, however, and I'll be looking to pick some more of these up in the future.

I fired one of these up last night for a little early thanksgiving celebration. The coffee and bread flavors came through in abundance. I missed out on the cream though...if it was there, it was overshadowed by the other flavors.

Hoyo De Monterrey Regalos Edicion Limitada 2007

PUT May 07

46 x 137 mm

When I think of Edicion Limitada cigars which floated my boat I think of the Cohiba DC, The Cohiba Piriamide (2006) and the HDM Piramide which I first tried in Havana from memory. Ken and I found them at $130 USD a box....we thought it was a misprint and gorged ourselves. I brought 5 boxes back of the HDM Piramide. For a long time it was my go to cigar but my thoughts are that it has not aged particularly well as they have lost some of their flavour intensity. Others think I am an idiot (Ken) and that they have remained one of the best of all EL releases.

Well this morning after a quick cup of coffee I reached for a bottle of Pinot Gris and the box of HDM Regalos. Good looking cigars albeit the wrappers are a touch "rough" with significant veining. Overall construction looks very good with a lovely sweet sandlewood aroma at cold.

Cerrated the cap.....tested the draw...spot on. Same sweet sandlewood on the lips.

Fired up the foot which combusted lustfully. Huge amounts of smoke and an immediate impact of sweet cream. Mother of mercy these taste so similar to the initial HDM EL Priamides. Sweet cream, nougat, light coffee all wrapped in a medium bodied format. Good kick of pepper through the nose but just luscious layers of cream on the palate.

I have been spoilt of late as I compare everything to the Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios which is a mistake. This is no Genios but while sharing many of the creamy characteristics, it treads a different path in that it pursues cream, coffee and sweet wood as opposed to the Genios chocolate.

This cigar is evolving beautifully. Luch mouthfeel, good burn, pure white smoke and plenty of it. Elements of shortbread and chinese 5 spice are introduced to the cream and milk coffee. Minismitty walks out to see what I am smoking as the aroma of the cigar is intoxicating. The aroma can only be escribed as sweet baked cake just taken from the oven.

Past the midway point and no elements of harshness. Just more of the same. Slightly fuller in body towards the back end but just a tad over medium body. Classic case of a medium bodied cigar with a full flavour. Complex, calm, clean flavour delivery. Very enjoyable and a mental note to keep the rest of the 24 to my part of the humidor (if Lisa approves  )

Increasingly woody yet sweet towards the back end. Some charred wood characteristics showing through but only enhancing the total package. Some stewed fruits in there somewhere, plums, raisins.

For fans of the HDM Piramide EL....get your hands on a box. They are pricey at $350 USD/ $850 AUD but worth every cent/penny/peseta.

E-mail Lisa if you want a box as we only have a small shipment which will not reach our website. Follow up stock is 3 weeks away.

Excellent, entertaining, balanced, flavourome medium bodied cigar of the highest order.

91/100 5/6 smokerings.
