Romeo y Julieta Robusto LE 2001

Today was a great day. Mrs. Twain and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary. After a very full and happy day, including dinner out with our son, I decided that it was time to try something different, something that I had never had before. I dug down into the special singles section of my desktop humidor, remembering that I had a number of cigars that I had received in PIFs.

I picked up the RJ LE and had a bit of hesitancy. I have tried about a half dozen LEs so far, and all have been disappointments—the dark LE wrapper seeming to drown out the flavor in these other cigars. But I thought that this one looked interesting. I have had this in my humidor for about 4 to 6 months. It was ready to try.

After clipping and lighting this cigar, the first puff was a revelation. This was probably the most flavorful first puff I have ever enjoyed from a cigar. There was an overwhelming sweet fruity and mocha taste, with just the right balance of flavors. As I continued to enjoy this cigar through the first third, I continued to get this very nice cherry-like fruit taste. It reminded me of fresh cherries dipped in just a little bit of cocoa, with a bit of sweetness but with a tart aftertaste.

Best first one third of a cigar I have ever smoked.

Surprisingly, the middle third of this cigar got milder. That same fruity taste with a dusting of mocha was still there, but it was more subdued. The fruity taste was more tart and less sweet. More of a strong tobacco taste emerging. Near the end of the middle third, this cigar was starting to get very strong. Lip numbing strong.

Final third—this RJ became a very strong cigar, with a big nicotine kick. I continued to get plenty of flavor, somewhat subdued from the intensity of the first third. The mocha taste became a rich, dark chocolate flavor.

Flavors in this cigar are somewhat reminiscent of RJ Exhibition #4 (99) that I have really enjoyed, but much more full bodied, strong, and with that bit of mocha. It also reminded me a bit of the Ramon Allones 898, which also has a fruity taste building in strength—but this cigar was much more flavorful, and less smooth. My taste buds were overpowered by the full and complex flavors in this cigar from start to finish.

All in all, this cigar was a real treat from start to finish. Every puff was enjoyable. It was an hour and 15 minutes of pure cigar pleasure. I’m giving this one 6 smoke rings out of a possible 6—the first cigar that I have put at the top of the scale.

Thanks so much to the Board member who sent this my way.

Happy anniversary to both you and Mrs Twain

This has become a treat of a cigar. It is like smoking a Black Forest Gateaux.

Great review :ok:

Gateaux.

For the English-speaking, Gateaux is not bear droppings...

it is a cream-filled layer cake!

RyJ Robusto EL 2001

Initial puff is pure graham cracker

Mocha, mild chocalate roasted nuts, woody were the flavors

Dark wrapper, solid construction

One dimensional to start and unfortunately stayed that way

8.5/10
