motownflip Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 I had a unicos while in Cabo in Feb. It was outstanding. Been contemplating a box ever since. I don't know what I've been waiting for. Maybe I'm waiting to find one with some age. Thanks for the review, maybe this was just the ugly one of the bunch.

I agree that the vast majority of Unicos I have had have been exceptional including some from 06. This was a dud. I will review again within the week.
Colt45 Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Thanks for another candid review. I do find what you feel to be a lack of ligero a bit bothersome - I keep getting snookered into believing that we're past this type of inconsistency. At least it sounds like the Unicos flavor was there, albeit hiding. Hopefully it was just an isolated example.
idesign Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Dearest Lisa, please tell me you didn't replace the single Rob stole and send this box my way.....:-D

I'm looking forward to your updated review tho. Previously, I've only ever smoked one Unicos, that was from 2000, it was a good smoke but not sublime, unlike the aged famosos and hopefully the don alejandro (have a box of 05's maturing ). That said it was just one cigar. One point of curiosity for me is that the VR Unicos are always priced higher than mainline pirimades, do you know why this might be?
olotti Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 This is one of my top 3 torps hopefully it was just a dud and not a trend although this was one brand I don't ever recall hearing as much about their 06 crop as say the CoRo's, PLPC's, PSD4's and JL#2's.

El Presidente Posted June 7, 2007 Author Posted June 7, 2007 I finished not an hour ago a Unicos from April 2006. It was better but still only an average cigar. The draw was way too loose and there is still a lack of core strength/body. I would rank it an 85. I will try again with another OCT 06 example.

Well, maybe an appendage. ;-) Inconsistency in cigars seems to be unavoidable, to some extent. But your reviews of various dates of a certain frontmark are intriguing. Thaks for the effort!
shrink Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 What a shame! If I were judging on looks alone, I'd give it 100! There's just something about that VR band!
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Vegas Robaina Unico ROA OCT 06 This has always been a solid piramide with a big fan base. I don't think they have every reached the heyday of the initial release which were some of the finest pirimides made (IMHO). This example was gorgeous. Beautiful wrapper with a sweet dusted cocoa aroma at cold. Construction at the foot looked a little on the tight side. Weight in the hand felt fine. Clipped the cap on an angle and tested the draw. A little on the tight side but workable and likely to open up before long. Flavour of plain sponge cake on the lips. Fired up the foot. Disappointed to find a very light body. Whispy. Draw after the first few minutes improved to good but this cigar is much milder than expected. Pissed off. Not in the mood for a mild cigar lacking any real flavour definition. Persisting....still mild. Insipid, piss weak. After the first third I contemplated pitching it from the deck to the garden below. Thought against it. By the halfway point I was glad that I had battled on. The VRU increased to just short of mid body and all of a sudden there were shots of dusting cocoa and Gateaux on the the palate. At last something I could focus on. Slowly increasing still more to mid body. The palate is all cake like...toffee gateaux. Frustratingly, the flavour profile is all on the outskirts...looking for a real core/heart/soul of flavour. The cigar is lacking a midpalate, lacking an identity/cojones. I finished this cigar. I can't say I oberly enjoyed it. I have had great Unicos in the past and this was not one of them. It lacked Ligero and hence and semblance of true character. This was another example of the cigar version of the "Tin Man" fom the Wizard of Oz. No heart. I doubt this box will age well. It may appeal to those who enjoy the lightest of cigars. Looking forward to trying another Unicos soon to see if this cigar was an exception or a trend. 84/100 3/6 smokerings.
