Colt45 Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Great review of a fine cigar. Personally, I feel these are some of the most finely crafted Havanas.
Ken Gargett Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 great minds. actually pulled one out to smoke during the broncos game tonight. will let you know. i had memories that you were less excited by these a while ago? was i dreaming? i quite liked them when they were first released but since then have had mixed experiences.
stever Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Great reveiw. Have smoked a few and need to acquire more.
broozer Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 i smoked one of these cigars from '05 just last night and it was superb. up until a few weeks ago this was the only cigar from the trinidad line i had not smoked, so i traded some cigars for a 5'er from someone. now i HAVE to get a box or two of these. they are the best from the trinidad line in my opinion. oh yeah, they go GREAT with a pint of stella. :-D bruce
CIGARHead Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Damn. You outta write a Romance novel Rob. Great review...need to pick up another box of these. Dead on about the Reyes as well....never had a bad 'un
Ken Gargett Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 At home before the useless Broncs. Looked in reasonable condition. The smell while cold was quite muted. Couldn’t get much at all. Went back over the early notes and was a big fan of these when they first came out but then got far less excited. The latter ones, and this one, came from a batch i picked up in Spain, so perhaps it was a lesser release. That said, this was the nicest i have had for a while and i agree with Rob that a little time does help. This had settled nicely. The coffee notes Rob mentioned come through in spades, a lovely gentle creamy coffee character. There were also some spice and nutty notes. The cigar had good structure, smoked reasonably slowly and offered a little complexity. As it moved into the mid-section, the flavours became much more roasted nuts. The last third retreated to those attractive coffee notes with some nuts and earth and started to get a little hot. I thought it a good, not great cigar but worth having in the humidor and even more so, worth ageing for a few years. 88-89. i would also note that the very first robustos i had impressed but they have not lived up to the early promise (they didn't come from Spain). And as for Rob writing a romance novel, why would anyone think the world needs more *** porn?
anacostiakat Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 This is good info for me. I have a lot of experience with the Reyes and Fundys. I love them. The REs that I have will sit for as long as I can possibly let them before trying another. But the Coloniales, they seem to be a better ROI in terms of size/cost. I have a box but am not going to smoke any for a while as they are '05s.
Miami101 Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Wow Rob I have to pick up a few of these on my next order.......Great review.
winelover Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I love the coloniales, but only as an occasional smoke to have now and again in my rotation. That said, I finished my box long ago so need another! Very clean tasting cigars that pack a deceptive punch that you only realise once you've hit the final third.
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Trinidad Coloniales Mar 06 Beautiful looking cigar and after the Reyes my favourite of the Trinidad Lineup. I have always liked the Fundadores but they are a cigar that needs time to age. Reyes and Coloniales are good from the get go. Actually they are better than good, they are some of Cuba's finest small format cigars. I have rarely been disappointed with a Coloniales and never with a Reyes. This Coloniales (Petit Corona) looks great....smells great (all toasted tobacco and field mushrooms) and feels great. Cerrated the cap to find a dream draw and espresso cortado on the lips. Fired up the foot and was welcomed with sweet cream and iced coffee. What a beautiful cigar. Smoking this Coloniales is like catching up with an old friend. You can go months or years without seeing each other but when you get the chance to sit down it is as if it was just yesterday. I love the blend consistency of this cigar. The first half of this cigar was a walk through Rome's great backstreet cafe's. All strong espresso cut with a dash of warm milk with an added shot of sugar. Perfect balance, immensely enjoyable. Into the final third of this cigar some charred wood notes came to the fore alongside some savoury/salty biscuit which turned the sweet cream notes into a tarty/sour cheesecake note. Loved it. These belong in every humidor along with the Reyes. You can keep the Robusto Extra as I still find it to be one of the most overhyped cigars to come out of Havana. Coloniales: complex, layered, medium-full bodied, classy. What more can one want in a Petit Corona. 90/100 5/6 Smokerings
