I cant help but notice that the Dominican and Cuban lines have the same Cigar names for many of their cigars but they are obviously not the same. A Monte #2 Dominican is not the same as a Monte #2 Cuban.

Can anyone help me understand why they chose the same names? It almost seems line a bait and switch.

I've wondered about this for a while...

Thx

The Ether..

The short version.

Families owned Cuban brands worldwide.

Castro Nationalised brands and kicked out families.

Same families started same brands in other countries.

US Embargo....banned Cuban Brands allowing Families brands (Monte/ERDM etc) to thrive.

Not families fault.

Big mess.

I like the short version. Concise. To the point. Ever think of a future in creating concise history books?

i always loved the dave barry book on history (away in a box at the momet so can't give you exact name) where he simply decides that history would be so much easier if everything occurred on the one date. so decides on a day and that is it. would've made those exams easy!

I do not think it is a big mess in the country(USA) because all the stores sell is non Cubans. Americans like these names cause it sounds like a real cigars name in addition to the aforementioned Cuban expatriates issue.

I would like to know if this name confussion is a problem in other parts of the world? Do they sell many Dominicans in Europe?

Funny thing about it, if you look at it from a noob American standpoint is this. When I read Cigar reviews, the #2 was always ranked pretty high, so I bought a box of them (Dominican). And to be honest, enjoyed them until one day I read the fine print on a sister Cigar site, that the #2 that ranked so high was a Cuban. Which made me wonder what was up and why Dominicans and Cubans had the same name.

I didn't know the Cuban Monte's existed until I did some reading. I bet there are many Americans that are buying the Dominicans that think they are smoking Cubans.

I hate to say it but most american cigars smokers are clueless about cigars and probably think McDonalds is fine dining.

I REALLY hate to admit this buuuuuut... :-O

My humidor (150 Capacity) is full of USA legal cigars. Out of all of them, the Monte Double Corona is my favorite, with the rest being, "eh, whatever". I'm really looking forward to a new experience...

My comment was in jest - I have a medium tupperware full of very good NCs.

Every now and again, when I feel I've been bad, and need to be punished

(uh, no, I don't need any help, thank you), I foul my palate by smoking one :-D

No confusion Mel. Cuba holds and enforces trademarks throughout the rest of the world. It is illegal to market a Non Cuban HDM/Monte/Cohiba etc. General Cigar and others who hold NC rights with the same names often rebadge the cigars in other parts of the world.

Hey Kentucky!

I have very little first hand experience with what you have asked as I smoke nothing but cigars with a pedigree and provenance from the land of Cuba. BUT in being around the “on-line” smoking environment awhile I have gotten to know a rather formidable amount of smokers who exist in similar conditions. I will via proxy then, give you a little insight as to what you are in for.

1) A whole new smoking experience.

2) Disappointment and heartache as your old friends (those sticks you now own) become nothing more that placeholders for the real cigars that you have ordered to take their place. At first you will feel guilt but soon that guilt may become downright anger!

3) Soaring credit card bills!

4) A shrine of some magnitude dedicated to storing the precious items which have caused your credit rating to decline. If 150 is good then 1500 is better…. But why stop at 1500!!!

5) A strong kinship towards others with the same ailment. This is a good place to start!

6) #5 is important because this will likely lead to a decline in your harmony at home and my cause divorce!

7) #6 is okay because it is better to smoke inside your home than outside of it as I understand it gets cold in Kentucky.

8) You may even humble yourself to folks living in places like Australia…

Best of luck and see you at the next Habanos Anonymous meeting! -LOL

I have a desk top with NCs but don't reach for them very often. Once you get on the good stuff the others just fade. The Cuban tobacco is just soooooo much smooohter. The Dominican lijero almost makes me sick now.

PigFish, thanks for your thoughtful response. Yeah, I can already see this becoming a problem if the Cubans are as good as you say. I'm prepared to pitch everything in my Humidor in the trash (bye bye) if the new stuff is that good and I don't have any trouble from , "The Man" getting stock to my door. I'm already thinking about buying a bigger humidor. Mine holds 150, which ain't much if I buy boxes. I may just have to build one for aging, or use Robs Humidor service, but I can't see myself buying 6 boxes right now, that would be a little rough on the finances.

I was thinking of what I could do with my Extra NC's. I could remove the labels from the Cubans and relabel the NCs then sell them to people I don't like. HEHEHE :-D (just kidding)

I will be buying larger quantities however. I'd be nice to have a moderately sized stash to age in case supply lines disapear.

I fired up a 17 dollar Pardon 1964 series the other night and got about 1 inch out of it before it went out, I relit and got another 1/2 inch then poof, out again. What a P.O.S.. Top25cigar ranks the 1964 line as the best. It had a tight draw and I thought it tasted like a smooth uninspiring ****. I became so bored that I didn't relight it and left it in the ashtray to die a horrible death.

I'm sick of paying premium prices for garbage.

»Big mess.

Very succinct Prez.

Court battles have awarded "ownership" of many brand names to Castro's Cuba.
