Juan Lopez Seleccion No 1

It had been quite some time since I had tried these, as I was completely underwhelmed when last I did (a view that was shared by a few mates who had similar forgettable experiences). Lately, the reports have been much stronger, indeed extremely positive in some cases, and so thought it time for a revisit. Whether a bunch of us jagged a bland batch back whenever or perhaps it is simply that the standards have greatly increased but I am now a convert. These are terrific mid-sized, mild cigars that can fill a hole in the afternoon with a quiet beer. Full of character and flavour, the burn was immaculate and exhibited a nice little cone. Smoked slowly and consistently with strong milk coffee and cream notes. Slow and gentle fade to finish, these are a really lovely smoke and one that I’ll be back to on a far more regular basis. Worth a look for anyone who has been neglecting these of late. 91.

Perhaps the finest mild cigar in the world. The complecity of flavour is excellent and the body of the cigar is like a fine dry Rose wine on the palate. My favourite Summer afternoon cigar. 90

I'm working my way thru a box of these right now and just had another this afternoon. I do like them, but there just a tad too mild for my taste. That last 1/3 of the cigar is the GREAT (obviously, a bit stronger near the end). As I smoked one today the flavor that kept coming to mind was baked beans with a lot of brown sugar. I know, it sounds funny, but that is what I kept coming back to as I analyzed this smoke.

No codes, but no band, so I'd guess '04 (unless these are still unbanded)

Contruction: very well made - beautiful to behold.

Wrapper: deep tan - the color of a dried oak leaf. Very smooth, with minimal, fine

veining. Fantastic sheen. This, for me, is the perfect wrapper.

Draw: a little tight, but not so much as to be a detriment.

Taste: first half was all sweet and sour spice and smooth cream. This subsided

slightly in the second half, with the addition of roasted almonds, subtle cedar, and

anise. There were some very subtle hints of dark cherry near the end.

I agree with Ken and everyone else on this one. This was my first - I loved it.

I'm really likng the corona gorda format, and the advocates of thinner ring

guages (though 46 isn't considered thin, it is when compared to 50), are winning

me over.
