jqmunro Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I recently picked up an '06 CAB of SLR-DC's and had to try one before sending them on a long dark slumber. I always like to try one or two cigars from a box before they age. Appearance - Perfect dark, oily, silky smooth wrapper with some small veins throughout. Obviously a choice wrapper considering the size of leaf necessary for a cigar of this magnitude. Reminds me of the thigh of a virgin cuban Construction/burn - Impeccable construction - wouldn't expect anything less from a fabled cigar as such. The burn was also perfect without ever having to relight, as well as a nice draw; not too loose not too tight. Flavor - This giant started out with a delicious chocolate mousse with toasted hazelnuts and almonds. Not something would expect from such a youngin, but leaves you to wonder what the youngins these days do when left to their own. The second third developed into sweet bread dusted with dutch cocoa and nutmeg with a long lingering finish. It leaves me to wonder if the blender for this cigar had dessert on his mind when chosing the leaves to put into the blend. Finally a combination of cafe latte with toasted tobacco and cedar gave way to some unrefined youthful flavors, bringing me back to reality that I shouldn't be too hard on such a youngin. By far the best young habanos that I have smoked this year. 92/100, 5/6 rings - easily a potential of 95+ with 5 years of age on them. The SLR-DC is by far one of the most complex habanos, in my opinion.
El Presidente Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Great revoew and hands down the finest of all Double Corona currently being produced.....actually produced since 2001. The only things which hold a candle are the 96/97/98 Punch Double Corona and Partagas Lusitania.

If these '06 age as well, they will be priceless.
Cam Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 great review mate, might buy a few for the desktop, are they available in smaller packs rob?
Colt45 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I've yet to have that truly great SLR DC - no bad ones, just not the stellar example - yet.
servebig Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Great review, thanks! I was very happy to pick up 17 of the original 2001 release from a BOTL that was having a big sale about a year ago. Wonderful smokes, that ended up having some beetle infestation :-( Because of this I was forced to smoke them all quickly, along with the rest of the cigars in that humi. They were delicious, even with the extra beetle larvae.

stever Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Nice review. I've smoked some of the '06s and I'm finding it difficult to let them rest. A couple have had tight draws or burns that at times seem to run, but I attribute these anomalies to lack of age. Compared to a '05 I've smoked, I find that the '06s are richer and have more depth of flavor. One that I smoked last night, exhibited intoxicating, almost heady, aromas and flavors halfway through. I found myself exhaling through my nose a number of times. Need to try one of the fabled '01s so as to truly the gauge the potential of the '06s for myself.

El Prez, what's your take on the comparison of the 98 Punch DC's to the Churchills?
