I just don't get the PL No. 3, as much as I enjoy the Partagas in this vitola. A delicados would be more interesting to me, especially if they adjusted the blend a bit towards the full-bodied side. Well, it only goes to show ya: different strokes...

I believe the Por Larranaga Carlota (Connie No 3 format) would be the ultimate late morning coffee cigar. Medium bodied with lashings of strong coffee and honey notes which will age beautifully into a sweet, medium/full bodied cigar. All delivered in cabinets of 50 ;-)

JMH Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 I can only hope that that PL Carlota comes into existence.

Ginseng Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 Rob, You said they'd be surprised by the result. What were they expecting we'd say, and why? Wilkey
El Presidente Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 » Rob, » » You said they'd be surprised by the result. What were they expecting we'd » say, and why? » » Wilkey Wilkey, I can tell you that they would have laid money down that a large format cigar would have been selected. They would have let me write my own odds. One of the problems I have in convincing them of the demand for smaller formats as candidates for new releases is that few of the Habanos s.a Heirachy smoke them. We handed out plenty of aged Connoisseur No 3's in Havana and no-one within the industry had ever tried one before. When I gave one to Hamlet he called me a *** mother#ucker I insisted and 5 minutes into the Connie he turned to Jose Antonio Candia of Habanos s.a and said...."F##King great cigar". I converted Jose to them when he was here with me in Oct 06. Prior to that he had never smoked one and now he has an appreciation of the richness and depth of flavour a small format cigar is capable of delivering. So you see the problem.

Do they also only smoke recent production? Do they collect and savor aged cigars?
El Presidente Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 » Very interesting. Do they also only smoke recent production? Do they » collect and savor aged cigars? Few have access to aged Habanos so regular production is what they smoke. They gravitate to the larger format cigars particularly Robusto, Canonazo, Pirimide and Churchill. Hamlet says I am the only *** MF who asks him to roll carlota's (Connie 3) formats. He hates doing it and will do it when pressed and only when no-one is watching :-D I love watching him squirm and the never ending flow of expletives ;-)
Tampa1257 Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 I agree with Rob, that it boils down to the Issue of Education. As the Altadis people formulated their Marketing Background in the Non-Cuban Cigar Industry and the fact that for a cigar of that Manufacturing takes a thicker ring to provide enough tobacco to give the flavor that a cigar such as the Connaisseur No.1,2 or 3 can provide in a thin ring format. As you have witnessed yourself from truly great rollers in the Cuban Industry to Head,s of Habanos S.A. itself, they have never even tried the thin ring cigars before and through your efforts are only now beginning to see that they provide a excellent flavorful and complex smoking experience that is unparalleled to the thicker formats. Thank you for your continued efforts to show Habanos the real reason why cigars such as the Connaisseur Serie have a value to the Market, and are appreciated by the consumers.

Crystal clear, Rob. Simply stunning. So small cigars are not considered "macho" Fascinating that those deep in the industry seem to have a completely different compass than we "connoisseurs." It is stunning that someone like Sr. Candia was, perhaps intentionally, unaware of certain niches of riches in their product line. Wilkey
12stones Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 If they're not macho then I guess I'll have to live with myself...I am in love with the thinner ring guages, much of it thanks to Rob and his insistance, but also others "in the know" kept pushing me towards them. While I would have loved to have seen an RA Pyramide, I think the PL #3 is pure genius. I hope they listen.
Tom Bolivar Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 Two month ago my favourit retailer handed me a Connaisseur No. 3 from 1988. Ever since I can not stop thinking about this cigar. :-D
