El Presidente Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 The discussion on the deck last Friday was what would you comfortably pay for a cigar. We broke it down into 4 categories: 1. The once or twice a year aged classic: Your pride and joy cigar, the one you reach for on that hellishly special moment. I would (and have spent) $100 AUD on these ($80 USD). Have some Monte 2's from 82 which fit this bill. 2. The top end cigar which is at the Apex of your regular rotation. IMHO, There is no better cigar running around than the Cohiba Pirimide LE. It is my APEX animal, the king of the jungle in my humidor, the cigar which sets the standard. $35 USD / $51 AUD 3. The daily cigar....the go to. The one you reach for more than any other. For me it has become the Partagas Connoisseur No 3 or the Cohiba Robusto. Happy to spend $10-$12 USD / $15-25 AUD 4. The fishing/yard/camping/ Moocher hand out cigar. $5 USD/ $8AUD is my limit on this onel. Por Larranaga Panetela or Montecarlo territory.
Colt45 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 » » 1. The once or twice a year aged classic: Your pride and joy cigar, the » one you reach for on that hellishly special moment. » For a cigar akin to the finest wine of burgundy or bordeaux, that would be smoked on the rarest of occasions, I could conceivably see paying up to $100 US. » » 2. Ken Gargett Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 i reckon a lot of that is spot on but for me, the exception is that i don't smoke enough cigars (time, never having been a cigarette smoker, whatever) that i don't have a category four. if i'm having a cigar, it is in one of the first three categories, and obviously in cat 3 most of the time.
Ken Gargett Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 and yes, the moochers (i'm thinking of a 'mate' who was caught last week going through our filthy bins seeking any tasting bottles i might have tossed out half full). that is why i always try and bring a few fakes back from cuba. he loves them and is convinced, and i have no doubt tells his mates, that they all once belonged to fidel.
Ginseng Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 » 1. The once or twice a year aged classic: Your pride and joy cigar, the » one you reach for on that hellishly special moment. $35-50 US » 2. The fishing/yard/camping/ Moocher hand out cigar. $1-2 US For me there is also the occasional special cigar which settles in at $15-20. Wilkey
Professor Twain Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 » 1. The once or twice a year aged classic: Your pride and joy cigar, the » one you reach for on that hellishly special moment. Hypothetically, $40 US (but I have never spent over $20 on a cigar) » 2. The top end cigar which is at the Apex of your regular » rotation. $12 US, e.g. aged Monte Especial #1 » 3. The daily cigar....the go to. The one you reach for more than any other. $6-8 US » 4. The fishing/yard/camping/ Moocher hand out cigar. $4-6 US
Well Armed Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Well, for your first category I would have to say I am not sure. I don't have access to special cigars that I could purchase for a special occasion like that. I suppose when I am celebrating my 50th anniversary with my wife in Havana I will have no price limit. But for the second, third, and fourth category I agree 110% with your selections. Except maybe I like a bit more variety and I really don't let price factor in. I look at value - pleasure/time/price last.
jgros001 Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 » 1. The once or twice a year aged classic: Your pride and joy cigar, the » one you reach for on that hellishly special moment. This is theoretical as I have never purchased a cigar costing more than $20 but would probably spend around $100 for a truly special cigar once a year if I can find one. » » 2. The top end cigar which is at the Apex of your regular » rotation. Top end cigar for me would be about $20 » » 3. The daily cigar....the go to. The one you reach for more than » any other. For me it has become the Partagas Connoisseur No 3 or the Daily cigar would be about $5-12 eg. a Punch Punch/Epi1/Siglo II/RASCC » 4. The fishing/yard/camping/ Moocher hand out cigar. About $2-5
Tampa1257 Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 1. The once or twice a year aged classic: Your pride and joy cigar, the one you reach for on that hellishly special moment. I have spent up to USD $50 without remorse on a very, very special cigar, but that really is an exception to the rule, On other occasions, I have spent USD $35 several times on once in a lifetime type of cigar, and probably would again in the future depending on the cigar. 2. The top end cigar which is at the Apex of your regular rotation. Apex cigars for me would be something very special that I would only smoke on rare occasions such as a Cohiba Siglo VI or a Partagás Dinner cigar from the Partagás Factory or something like a Partagás Salomone. I also have others that come damn close, yet because they are special to me, I save them for just the right opportunity. These I would consider USD $15-$20. 3. The daily cigar....the go to. The one you reach for more than any other. For me it has become the Partagas Connoisseur No 1 or the Cohiba Robusto, RASS or a PSD4. Happy to spend $7-$10 USD 4. The fishing/yard/camping/ Moocher hand out cigar. I enjoy some smaller cigars that some people might consider cheap moochador type cigars, but I have also found true value to them, Items such as Partagás Shorts, RASCC, El Principe, Bolivar Corona Juniors. These should never cost more than $4-$6 USD.
Mark Twain Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 » 1. The once or twice a year aged classic: Your pride and joy cigar, the » one you reach for on that hellishly special moment. I think I top out at $30-$35 for a cigar in this range. I think the PAM 'A' with an MSRP of $32 or the Opus BBMF are the tops for me, but to be honest I paid $20 or below for both of them:-D The Sancho Panza Sanchos is wonderful with some age and I was gifted one that cost under $20 » 2. The top end cigar which is at the Apex of your regular » rotation. $12-$15. Most cost me between $8-$10. Fuente, Padron, and LFD are some heavy NC brands that I hit often. For Cubans, I like the Partagas P2 and the Monte #2, but the RyJ churchill and Partagas Lusi can be found with age below $15 a stick.;-) » 3. The daily cigar....the go to. The one you reach for more than » any other. $4-$6. A lot of Cuban PCs in this area, and not to many NC cigars. I like Bolivar, RASCC, Monte #4. Hell, most of the Cuban Robustos I smoke fall into this area from the RASS to the Bolivar RC. » 4. The fishing/yard/camping/ Moocher hand out cigar. $2-$4. I've found several cigars on sale to be very good for the quality of the smoking experience I get from them. I've found some great cigars in this area, from the Padron Fumas to the Rocky Patel Factory Select SG. Lots of crap out there as well, but you can still find qualitiy if you search for it.

cls515 Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 1. The once or twice a year aged classic: Your pride and joy cigar, the one you reach for on that hellishly special moment. It would be $30 for an aged Siglo VI, unfortunately mine don't have age on them but I'd pay that for one 2. The top end cigar which is at the Apex of your regular rotation. $20 Cohiba Siglo VI 3. The daily cigar....the go to. I don't really have a daily cigar. I tend to reach for the cheaper petit coronas. 4. The fishing/yard/camping/ Moocher hand out cigar. $2 AF petit corona

anacostiakat Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Interesting discussion and totally subjective. I really try to stay 25 or less these days. For go-to daily stuff I like the low to middle teens at most. I dont buy yardgars or sticks for moochers as I dont tolerate them. ;-)

The fishing/yard/camping/ Moocher hand out cigar. The price ranges in my categories are more compressed - I'll spend less money on the top end and more money on the bottom end. 1. The once or twice a year smoke - that's probably a $25 cigar for me. 2. The top-end cigar for me is a Siglo VI or an aged RyJ LE robusto - so in the $15 - $20 a stick. 3. The daily stick is a pretty big range for me - everything from an Epi #2 to an Upmann Sir Winnie, so in the $6 to $15. I'll have a Sir Winnie every 10 days or so & smoke some or other decent robusto every couple of days. 4. I don't have hand out 'gars - people know me better than that. Yard 'gars might be anything from a Party short to a Siglo I to a PSD4.
