Stalebread
Greetings, Gentlemen and Ladies, I’m happy to be here. Looks like good folks and good info. Hope I can add something on both accounts. OK, maybe just one. Been learning about and enjoy cigars seriously (but not too seriously) for a couple of years now. Currently live in Paris where I do not speak the language. A bientôt. (and I even had to look up that)

So we moved. Before that, spent the last 20 years in New York City. In Paris we live in the 11th between Place de la Bastille and Place de la Republique. Actually, I really like Paris. For many reasons, not the least of which is there is a great cafe culture that was not present in NYC. The street life is rich. Beautiful women (and men, too, I suppose). Buildings are low enough to allow for lots of sun and air. And Paris is cigar friendly, for the next year, anyway.

Stalebread
» Welcome. Never been there, and have only seen parts of France from the » Eurostar at 200 kph (I don't think this counts actually). Whats France's » attitude on smoking?? Hope to go in a year or so. At this point, very smoker friendly. Very cigar friendly. Regulations were just put in place that will change that over the next year. Starting (now?) government buildings, train stations, office buildings, places like that, are going smoke free. Bars, cafes, resturants have until, I think, Feb. 2008 to become compliant. Which means having a hermetically sealed room with its own ventilation system for smokers. Smoking will still be OK on the terrace. I am waiting so see how the French will work around this. Claudius
» Regulations were just put in place No regulations other than the 1992 "Evin" law are currently in place in France to regulate smoking in public places. The current situation is this: Prime Minister Villepin announced on TV that he will sign a decree (which is currently being written / prepared) in November this year. That decree should then prohibit smoking in offices and such public places other than cafés, restaurants, clubs and casinos from February 2007. The cafés, restaurants etc will be given until January 2008 to become smoke-free or to implement hermetically sealed smoking rooms. Note that the hotel and restaurants association is protesting, asking for an extended time frame to implement the planned measures. Nationwide protests in front of local government offices ("préfectures") are planned for November 6th. Right now it's all talk: there is no decree or other piece of legislation other than that 15 year old law no one cares about and which is not enforced. » Smoking will still be OK on the terrace. There is no way for Dominique on his own to outlaw smoking outside, as decrees need to work within current legislation ("Evin" law from 1992, which defines smoking and non-smoking areas in "public, covered and closed places"). That's the "downside" to not going through parliament to modify legislation! :-P :-D » I am waiting so see how the French will work around this. Probably like the Italians did: build nice, big, heated terrasses so people can eat (and smoke) "outside" all year long. Inside is non-smoking :-)
