KB24
» Anyone smoke one of these yet? Curious how they are » » » Cohiba I have what I believe to be 2 aged Cohiba Esplendidos. I got them from my fiance's uncle who had them in an unproperly kept humidor in Sun Valley Idaho. I say unproperly kept because when I opened it up all the cigars in there appeared to be dried out and cracking. I took the 2 sticks home with me and put them into proper conditions where they have been sleeping since Dec. 28th 2005. I think they are aged because the band does not say "COHIBA" in gold writing but in black. I might not be correct on this but doesn't the newer bands say "COHIBA" in gold writing and if true when did this start? The 2 cigars were in the individual boxes so I have no idea there production date. Hell I might even have some fauxhibas and even if they are real habanos, they might have been so dried out that are no good anymore. To answer your question though, there was a third Esplendido in his humi that we smoked and it was great. Nice draw, burn, and flavor. I cant give you more than that because it was prolly 10 deg outside and we were drinking to stay warm and the cigar was being shared. But I can say from what I have read and talked to people about, any Esplendido, aged or unaged, is a treat and should be cherished. Sorry if I totally butchered your post. Let's be friends!!! Tampa1257
My experience with the Cohiba Espléndidos is that I have smoked both aged and young cigars. When the Espléndidos is "ON" they are absolutely wonderful. The beany flavors of rich coffee, mocha, vanilla and honey are complex as well as the deeply medium body of rich tobacco dance on your palate. When a Espléndidos is "OFF", frankly they suck. I have not experienced any middle ground. Unfortunately, I have experienced them being "OFF" more often than "ON", and they are a very expensive gamble for me personally to take at this time. If they were consistently "ON", I'd be all over them, but they are one of the most inconsistent cigars coming out of Cuba in my opinion.

Well Armed
Ken, were the good ones you smoked from that gifted box of a more recent vintage? Like, say late 2005/early 2006? If so it may be that they have improved things enough to turn things around. FWIW every 'Dido I have ever smoked has been superb. All are from Czar though so go figure - just kidding. Thinking about investing in a box for the long long long term but I am also apprehensive due to inconsistencies.

I can see it now. Rob on a huge multi-day bender talking to some big wig Habanos execs and they turn to leave at 4AM and he yells out, "Wait! I just have a few questions!!" At least he wrote them down ha ha.
seamus
Every aged Espledidos I've had was great but aged being 5+ years. Even fresh I've had far more good than bad. One of the best, IMO.

CWS
»Its pretty much been said. I have been going through a box of 1998's that each and everyone have been fabulous. I have bought fivers and singles in the last few years with very mixed luck. Word out is that the 2005's are good the couple I've tried have been excellent.
