I have been exploring the world of smaller ring gauge cigars lately. I have fallen in love with the Partagas SdC No. 1 and 2 and I already really enjoyed the Cohiba Lanceros. I have also smoked the Montecristo Especial No. 2 and find it to be an excellent cigars...especially for mornings.

I would like to expand my horizons. I have done some research and wanted to solicite the board's thoughts on the following cigars:

Cohiba Coronas Especiales

El Rey del Mundo Grandes de Espana

Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de Dauphin

Montecristo Especial No. 1

Quai d'Orsay Panatelas

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

CDawg,

I havent tried all of these, but here is my take on the ones I have:

Cohiba Coronas Especiales - To me, taste very similar to the Lancero, just shorter, still damn good for less time.

Montecristo Especial No. 1 - Superb cigar. It has the classic Monte taste, but much more refined and quite spicy too.

Why not go straight for the smallest of the small? I've got some ERdM Demi Dasse and Monte Joyitas if you want ot give them a spin.

The Cohiba Coronas Especiales that I have had are superb, I just got a box of El Rey del Mundo Grandes de Espanas from '02, but have only tried one it was not as good as the bonus one that I got from last months member special. It was, however, still recovering from its trip from Oz. I haven't tried either of the others and agree on your comments of the ones you have tried. You might add the Trini Fundadore to your list of cigars to try.

Do not miss these. Excellent cigars. One of my favorites.

ERDM Grandes de Espana is a go for me mate along with the Part Serie du Conn. #3. Cohiba is a little larger by girth but a great small stick.

I love the Monte #1s. It was already mentioned but I'll 2nd the fact that this stick is quite a refined smoke. I tried a couple singles and they were great.:ok:

I have for a long time spoken about the flavors and nuances that I have found in the smaller ring Habanos as being some of the most complex available. I agree with Van55 about the Montecristo Especial No. 1 as one of my personal favorites. Someone mentioned the Trinidad Fundadore, and that too is a must try in my opinion.

This is what I said in a review of the Monte Especial No. 1:

"the nuances that I have found in the smaller ring Habanos"

Right! Chuck, the only reason you like 'em is because somebody told you that they make you look thinner, or sexy, or something. :-D

Yeah, they're all good... the Party du Cons, the Monte Esp's, the Cohiba Lanceros and Esp's. You have to smoke patiently, but the flavor is concentrated. I suspect it also has to do with the relative proportions of ligero, seco and volado vs. wrapper/ring ratios, etc. Whatever the reason, I luvs 'em thin.

Cohiba CE - these have become one of my favs now. The finish last for hour.

ERDM GE- A sweet tasteing cigar more like the tastes of the Choix Supreme.( Have 2 boxes of these and they are good) only draw back is they are tightly rolled. Havent had a plugged 1 yet, but very tight draw.

HDM- havent had that 1

MOnte Especials- To me they taste similar to the 1,2,3,4,5 ( but then Montes taste alike for me)

QdO- More of a lighter cigar with pure tobacco taste ( not to my likeing)

Nice selection of cigars... all of them.

»

» Cohiba Coronas Especiales

Really good with some age! If you like Lanceros you will like these as well. Good Cohiba value, right up there with the S-3.

» El Rey del Mundo Grandes de Espana

Picked up two boxes from Rob recently. These are the cream of the crop today... Let it be our secret! -LOL

» Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de Dauphin

Not the complexity of the du Depute. Hit and miss for me. Good when on.

» Montecristo Especial No. 1

Everything a good Monte is. These are a real hit for me and a go to cigar. Better than a No. 2 but that is because I prefer the vitola. Can't miss with these but out of current tasting still behind the ERdM.

» Quai d'Orsay Panatelas

Have not smoked one recently in order to make an honest evaluation.

Yep, forgot to mention the Trini Fundadores. Have tried several and really like them. They are already on the list.

OK, it seems that the ERDM Grandes de Espana, Cohiba Corona Especiales, and the Montecristo Especial No. 1 are recommended by just about everyone. Are there years to look for and years to avoid?

I like small ring gages and the Monte Especials and Corona Especiales are my favorites. When they're aged, they are really excellent.

Used to only smoke the large ring gauges. Then I figured out that I was missing a world of wonderful smokes. Now, I rarely smoke anything over a 46 ring and then it is almost always a robusto/hermosos no. 4. I find the flavors in the smaller ring gauge cigars sharper, more available, and even richer than in the larger formats.

I've got to sit on the fence on this one. I really like to run the gamut when it comes to cigars. I have come to appreciate the smaller ringed smokes in a big way but will never be able to give up the larger ringed sticks. Only factor that might sway me is that I would be able to fit more boxes in the humi, those DC boxes do take up alot of space.

I agree with liking QdO. However, I can only speak from the experience of smoking the Coronas Claro. I have some from 01 that are fantastic. Have you had good experiences with the Panatelas? Do they draw well?
