El Presidente Posted June 23 Posted June 23 "The most overrated cigar on the shelf today -- you're not gonna see it at STOA, but you see it at a lot of other places -- ... I'm gonna have to go with Davidoff because of the price point and the reviews," Boyert says. "They do have good cigars, but it's not worth the price point. Corporate has taken that brand so far from its roots, it's not even the same brand anymore." https://www.aol.com/articles/cigar-brand-labeled-most-overrated-043320000.html The comment regarding corporate hit home. You could make the argument that Habanos S.A. has done the same. I am not sure I would list Davidoff as the most overrated cigar brand on the market? There are a few others that come to mind. 1
LizardGizmo Posted June 23 Posted June 23 I've been beating the Davidoff drum for awhile and sometimes I wonder if it's a dead horse...but obviously given last week's thread here on FOH and commentary like this, it seems like a lot of folks agree. Hopefully they can turn it around.
Joeyjojo Posted June 24 Posted June 24 In the UK the basic Davidoff range is around the same as a CC these days - £30-40 for a decent Robusto. But beyond that, the prices spike into la-la land and well beyond my modest means. I get that Davidoff put a lot of work into it. For example, the Yamasa project supposedly took 5 years just to get the soil right, let alone growing, aging etc. But when a lot of other NC companies are able to make stunning cigars for £20-25, it's hard to justify £100+ for a Royal Robusto etc.
JDoughty Posted June 24 Posted June 24 I've enjoyed Fabrica 005 and Bond Roberts sticks more for 1/4 or less of the price. Greater complexity, depth of flavor and better construction too. After the latest release debacle from Davidoff, which was genuinely an awful smoke, I am unlikely to buy any more of their new production. It just isn't anywhere near as good as the brand used to be. Definitely doesn't hit at their price point.
BG318 Posted June 24 Posted June 24 My wife has brought this home for me. She likes to smoke cigars with me- small ones, and there aren't many ones out there that suit her. She likes the Davidoff 5 and Entreactos. She might like the myriad CC selections, if I would only let her have one. I will not do this, due to the current scarcity. But, I am not saving money on this at all - $16.50 USD a stick. I bought a couple of AF Short Stories to try to wean her. The Davidoff cigars are usually good, but the value is just not there. 2
Dadof3 Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Davidoff has a model and it works for them. I don't think I've had one that is so good it's worth the premium price but they make nice gifts and at least in theory you can pick one up anywhere and it should be the same in each place. You see other companies also trying to adopt the model to a more limited extent. The Opus X lines from Fuente for example. At this point they aren't really rare but the price stays very high and plenty of shops still try to pass them off as restricted or exclusive. Meerapfel seems to be trying this approach as well. It's an unfortunate byproduct of the organic nature of cigars. If you find one that works for you it will probably change over time as years and crops change.
BrightonCorgi Posted June 26 Posted June 26 What percent do cigars sales account for Davidoff's total revenue?
