John Henry Lights 'Victory' Cigar on Wife's Instagram After Getting Alex Bregman

Published Feb 13, 2025 at 2:09 PM EST - By Jon Vankin

The Boston Red Sox got their man. After waiting patiently throughout the entire offseason, the Red Sox finally shelled out the cash that team president Sam Kennedy promised they would spend to improve the team after three straight years of missing the playoffs, and failing to post a record above .500.

Former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, who won two World Series rings with that team, agreed on Wednesday to sign with the Red Sox.

The hefty signing — an average annual value of $40 million for up to three years, though some of the money will reportedly be deferred — changes the narrative that had surrounded the Red Sox -- at least since 2019 -- of a tight-fisted principal owner John Henry who was more concerned about staying under the MLB luxury tax threshold than about winning pennants and championships.

Henry once called it a "false narrative." With the signing of Bregman he was able to prove his point. And the 75-year-old multi-billionaire was not going to let the moment pass without a little gloating.

At least, his wife wasn't. Linda Pizzuti Henry — who is also CEO of the Boston Globe, which her husband owns — took to her social media accounts to post a picture of John Henry enjoying a cigar.

The cigar is a resonant symbol of triumph for Boston sports fans, most of whom remember, or at least will have heard of Boston Celtics legendary coach Red Auerbach who would light a "victory cigar" at the end of each game the Celtics won. Sometimes, Auerbach would light his victory cigar before the game was over.

Though Henry has now acquired Bregman — after the December signing of Juan Soto by the New York Mets, the most highly-prized free agent on the market — the game is not over for the Red Sox. At the outset of the offseason Kennedy said that the organization's "priority is 90 to 95 wins, and winning the American League East."

The game of reaching those goals has only just begun.
