yes, not many great actors in the moore era. plenty for connery.

my understanding about the Bolly deal was that Cubby Broccoli was sick of dealing with big companies all wanting product placement - there is a bit of that throughout Bond. they tried to stick to the books, early days - Taittinger was a great favourite of Fleming. and then moved to Dom P, but in one of the films, i think OHMSS, they use the 1957 vintage of Dom P, never made. so Cubby got annoyed, asked around to try and find a top notch but smaller family operation. was recommended to talk to Bolly. rang them up and arranged a lunch - by then, i assume Madame Bolly was gone and her nephew would have been in charge (he was followed by several nephews etc - including Ghislain de Montgolfier who was a lovely man and i had quite a bit to do with him - if i remember, i will tell the story of a lunch with him in the famous dining room some years ago next video - bit too long to write it all up). he was also a direct descendent of the Montgolfiers who invented flight in the hot air balloon.

anyway, they had a great lunch and at the end, Cubby said he wanted a small quality house. they would never need to pay for the exposure, just provide a couple of cases of whichever champagne they wanted featured, but there was never an obligation that it must be featured. they shook hands and it has been a handshake deal ever since.

I miss the old days where a handshake deal meant something. I've always poured Bolli for a Bond screening with friends as a tongue-in-cheek, but I'm happy to pass these tales along as I've earned new respect for the relationship.

Cheers!

007 was originally planned to drive a Jaguar E Type, but Jaguar did not want to donate a car for filming. The rest is history. The first DB5 was actually a DB4 with a facelift.

I met someone a few years ago who bought one of the DB5 "kit cars" used in NTTD. It's based off of a BMW M3 due to similar track and wheelbase.

did not know that. the first aston martin was in goldfinger and ended up with a bloke in florida. late 90s, it was stolen. recovered 25 years later in the middle east somewhere.

my mate at bolly told me that when they were filming the spectre chases in rome (cost them a fortune to shut down the city to film, even if it was at around 3am day after day), they had aston martin make them ten of this particular car. they were literally down to the tenth before they got the scenes right. destroyed all the others.

i have a photo somewhere of me standing next to one of the ones used in casino (possibly quantum? the time tends to merge) at a bond function in brizzy. they flew it out and managed to take down a wall to have a crane get it into the space. they also convinced the lord mayor to change the lights on the story bridge from the usual standard white to bolly's red and white for the night.

The bullet holes on the car are stickers.

no doubt, but the stunt drivers apparently kept smashing up these cars, which were apparently close to half a mill each (although that is a drop in the bucket for the budget of these films). the final scenes are composites from all of the filming but by the end, they were literally on their last car. the rest either totalled in smashes or ended up destroyed in the Tiber. no report of the stuntmen was offered.

The guy that bought the DB5 replica said it was like 90% complete and spent around 40K for it. Has many DB5 parts on it. A local friend is the leading authority/historian on the DB models in America.

I hope James Bond continues to drive Aston Martin's in future films.
