All set for the AFL Grand Final

wow. what a game. pulled out an old SLR DC in case it went badly - at least i could enjoy the cigar. but both stellar!! with a cracking tassie whisky.

always good to thrash the Mexicans. in fairness they were the top team all year and it must hurt to then get thrashed in the big one. i don't think i have seen this lions team play as well as they did. good day to choose to do it! i used to think that this team was a shadow of the legendary threepeat lions and they'd be lucky to get a single player in that side (maybe neale). now, i think they'd give them a run for their money. they were spectacular.

and how good is will Ashcroft. i know easy to say these things but the reports are that younger brother levi is even better. a friend who follows this stuff closely and watches the underage games says that it is not even close. levi is better in every way. fingers crossed.

i know all sides cop injuries but for me, the interesting thing is had all the brizzy players been fit, who would have missed. obviously oscar would have replaced fort but Lincoln mccarthy, angus gardner, doodee (i know little about him but apparently he is good) and coleman. they are all probable starters. so who would miss? answorth. probably Lohmann and ah chee who were stars yesterday. personally, i'd dump hipwood - most overrated player in the afl. half the crowd usually get more touches than he does. all going to make early next season a bit interesting.

Yep well said Ken. I think Joe Daniher kicked 2 five...may have been 2 goals four and a few of them pot shots by his standards.  I think his contested work off the ball  , tackling , contest marks, pressure and I tell you that boy can run ,  all amazing.  Starcevich the slap head was brilliant in defence along with Lester. The Lions midfield Harlem Globe trotter stuff at times throughout the finals series. Last week's preliminary was just epic. And the little admiral steering the ship Chris Fagan  what a superstar.  His boys just love him. 44 points down in the first final and then to go on in win four in a row . It is just massive in today's game. What a thrill for Dianna as well.

I don’t think Angus Gardner can play for the Lions as he’s probably tied up with his World Rugby ref commitments. Would have been nice to have Darcy Gardiner out there, though.

Yeah Answerth/Ah Chee/Lohmann would likely have missed as they were fringe players, but all stood up and delivered not just tonight but whenever they were called all season. And the former two are also some of the nicest, best quality human beings you’ll ever meet so I couldn’t be happier for them (Lohmann may be too, I just haven’t had any first or second hand connections with him given how relatively new he is.

I couldn’t confidently say Levi is better than Will, but from what I’ve seen he can’t be far off. Marcus Ashcroft’s DNA must be studied.

Hipwood is my most underrated Lions player, and that’s even if we disregard his unbelievable goal yesterday. He cops a lot of flack from keyboard warriors and I think it’s largely because his role in the team is poorly understood. His marking, positioning, and how he sets up some of the more dynamic players in the forward line is elite, and it’s noticeable that whenever he has missed a game due to injury, we always play worse, not better.

What was the whisky Ken?

What was the whisky Ken?

whisky from Overeem. cracking stuff.

and yes, apols. one of my best mates Angus, was chairman of the Lions a few years back and i went from chatting to him to writing the above. that ref is one of my least fave sporting figures. thankfully he can't do the wallabies, but he has shafted the reds many times.

don't know much about answorth but obviously they like him. i have wondered but he played well enough yesterday to justify his spot. Lohmann comes across as very likable but an absolute mug lair. be fun to have in your team. i did laugh when Dunkley called him a worry.

levi obviously now a long way to go to match will, but be interesting to see if he can. good problem to have. certainly getting some massive hype. seen a few pieces saying that in a normal year, he'd go number one. who knows. they also have first crack at a sam someone (apols, name escapes) who is also considered a first round talent. they are not going to have many draft picks for a few years.

even though it does look like we'll have an excess of players next year, no doubt there will be injuries and some will drop off in form. who knows if joe will be back and that could be a problem - i know joe is rocks and diamonds but they are some special diamonds - because there is no one there who is like-for-like. for me, certainly not hipwood. yes, that was an astonishing goal but honestly, same circumstances a thousand times and he does not make the kick again. it was just their day. i have watched hipwood closely. he wasn't bad over the last three to four years, though rarely dominated. he has gone backwards in the last year or so. aside from the goal, he was okay yesterday but he plays way under his salary. he had one blinder during the year, right when he was copping a lot of criticism. that said to me that when he wants/needs to, he can do it, but something not quite right. he does not do it often.

that crack about people in the crowd getting more touches, i reckon one bloke on the fence did get more touches than he did in one game. he runs around like a giant puppy chasing a car and lord help him if he catches it. one game i watched very closely. 6 touches/disposals. of those six, five he kicked directly to an opponent and the sixth was an easy shot for goal. he missed everything. for me, the most overrated player in the afl. but, he has a premiership medal so that is what matters. if joe plays next year, with those others back, i think he is in trouble. mccarthy might replace him. yes, much smaller but he takes marks, kicks goals, makes tackles. be fun to see.

if they can get their early season form under control, they should be top four next year, possibly top and a real shot for a repeat. not many sides out there would cause them to worry too much, especially the way they played yesterday.
