The Pantheon is a complete marvel of engineering. First time I visited, I spotted what looked like rainwater collection areas / drainage holes - but just couldn’t get my head around the idea that this would exit.

Sure enough though - it has sloped floors to run-off / collection areas, then drainage to below ground for any rain that enters. Years ahead of its time.

Roman mortar is unmatched. It lasted over 1000 years with zero touch ups. Modern day mortar is complete it's really amazing that Roman structures stand today with little to no maintenance. Modern day mortar can't hold a candle to it.

I say this SO often. Amazing we can’t make anything to last more than a few years.
