El Presidente Posted April 5, 2024 Posted April 5, 2024 The embargo is a foreign policy masterpiece https://www.bastillepost.com/global/article/3728222-cuba-receives-1st-batch-of-emergency-food-aid-from-china "Friends in Cuba, please believe that the brotherly Chinese people will always stand with you through thick and thin to realize the China-Cuba socialist community with a shared future and strive to build a better world," said Luo Zhaohui, Director of China International Development Cooperation Agency. 2 1 1
NSXCIGAR Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 When I think of the Chinese government "brotherly" is definitely what comes to mind. 2

The Chinese are not stupid, they are building their own allies drifting further and further away from the West… Maybe, but they still want the American dollars. When the US stops buying all their "junk", who fills the void? Certainly not Cuba.
ImTripN2 Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 @ Ray That was a fun read, but....Poof!!! Bet it will be gone when the boys wake up on Monday! Make fun of the Kiwis all you want, but the Chinese?? Uh oh...

The West buys their goods (that we gave up manufacturing) and they buy our government debt. Foreign holders of United States treasury debt Of the total 7.6 trillion held by foreign countries, Japan and Mainland China held the greatest portions, with China holding 868.9 billion U.S. dollars in U.S. securities. China owns approximately 20% of Australian Government debt.
Li Bai Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 Sharing one's opinion won't change anybody's mind (just like @Ken Gargett perfectly stated a few days earlier) but fwiw I think we westerners should give China more respect and less hate. I've been studying China and its culture for more than 20 years so I'm pretty familiar with those matters and what I saw is they've observed our consumer society, learned the rules (spoken and unspoken) and started to play our very own game for the better and for the worse. Our companies and our governments have given them the keys to our economies and now lots of us are hating on them? Come on... Now I'm not praising what's going on there, nor am I saying we should bow before anyone, but blaming China for everything is neither right nor deserved. 3

Our government was complicit in selling off our manufacturing base. Western consumers are complicit with an unchecked demand for cheaper goods. Chinese government is complicit in a host of geopolitical disgraces. In normal discourse however, there needs to be a clear delineation between the Chinese Government, Chinese national and someone with Chinese lineage. Lazy commentary sees a mix of all three being thrown around like confetti. 4 2

Like the FOH community generally/naturally distinguishes between with the Cuban government, Cuban nationals and people with Cuban lineage? Hear hear! 1

I'm pretty sure that estimated ~ up to 600 billion USD a year in Intelectual Property theft isn't in the 'rules.' Nor is the 'game' played by coercion, unfair trade practices, and slave labor. Hating on the self serving politicians who sponsor state sanctioned acts or have sold out the public for their self serving interest, yes.

I'm sorry my English isn't perfectly on point, when I speak about the "rules", I'm not talking about what's legal or what's fair and I'm definitely not advocating for those practices but...it is what it is.
