Not an NFC expert, but I imagine it won't take much for these little devices to be cloned thereby making it easier to counterfeit cigars. You can already buy perfect replicas of any fancy Habanos box out there already. Same goes with the bands. Unless the app reading the NFC can interact with a backend database to verify the record, it won't offer much protection. I suspect good counterfeiters will be able to supply their own backend DB for verification.

On the plus side, for legit boxes it will make the chain of custody data easier to manage. If I'm off in my assessments here, please educate me. :)

Without NFC on each stick, this really only helps with unopened boxes in the wild (from my seat at least). Does it even loop back to the individual box serial number?

Like so many security features, this seems mostly like show and not a ton of substance. Rule no 1, know thy vendor.

I’ve never actually bought a sealed box. Assuming it’s more common in Asia / PCC distribution countries than it is here in Ireland / UK / Europe?

I saw in the news today they’re beta testing self service TSA screening. Yeah, that’ll move things along while Meemaw and Peepaw try to get that process figured out 😂

That was something I was wondering. How difficult is it to clone an NFC signal?

I still think possibly the only way to guarantee authenticity is to have some kind of box registration like a car title. The current owner would have the code to allow a new owner registration upon transfer. This could be done by distributors assigning the original owner as the vendor and then the vendors can transfer to the buyer. Lots of work but if the demand is there for authenticity then maybe worth it.

Of course there's still no way to insure an actual cigar is authentic if genuine boxes and bands are used. But that's about as good as one can get.
