The below article is nothing new.

The big play however is Cuba trying to get a leg into BRICS.

14/8/23

The Brics group of big emerging economies has announced the admission of six new members, in an attempt to reshape the global world order and provide a counterweight to the US and its allies.

From the beginning of next year, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Argentina, the UAE and Ethiopia will join the current five members – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – it was announced at a summit in Johannesburg on Thursday.

China’s president, Xi Jinping, described the expansion as “historic”. He had been the leading proponent of the admission of new members, presenting an enlarged Brics as a way for the global south to have a stronger voice in world affairs.

One of Brics key objectives is a secondary global payment platform to work side by side (competition) to the existing US Swift system.

Cuba would give a right gonad to be part of such a system.

China will continue to support Cuba in the face of alleged external interference and blockades, President Xi Jinping has said.

Lauding Havana for “always firmly” supporting Beijing on issues concerning China's core interests, Xi told his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz-Canel that China “will continue to firmly support Cuba in defending its national sovereignty, opposing foreign interference and blockade.”

Beijing, Xi added, “will do its best to provide support for Cuba's economic and social development,” a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry said.

The duo met late Wednesday on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, the commercial capital city of South Africa.

Meanwhile, Xi also met with his Senegalese counterpart Macky Sall and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Xi told Hasina that China supports Bangladesh in “safeguarding national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and opposes external interference.”

He stressed that Beijing and Dhaka should “strengthen strategic communication and intensify exchanges.”

I'm surprised it took so long for Russia and China to realize that our attempts to weaken corrupt and despotic governments is their opportunity. No we need to rethink our philosophical framework of foreign affairs.

Russia and China were givens.

India and UAE are the interesting ones here. Saudi Arabia applied, were approved (last week) but have made no formal announcement as far as I can see. That may or may not be a game changer.

List of countries who have applied to join.

A total of 16 countries[92] have formally applied to join BRICS, listed as follows:

There are a three manufacturing powerhouses on that list.

Cuba isn't one of them. ;)

Overall. I can see how the US will infiltrate this group

Countries that still rely on US patronage (or at least arms sales) like Saudi Arabia have to be careful. Cuba is such a stupidly charged political issue in the US, and conspiring with China doesn’t help either. MBS clearly thinks of himself as a genius statesman, but I’m skeptical he can truly fence ride between the US and China/Russia without eventually picking a side.

Right now this isn’t much of an issue because the BRICS alliance is mostly symbolic. Challenging SWIFT would be an escalation. We’ll see.

Will be great for Cuba if they can join BRICS.  The sooner Gulf nations aren't as reliant on the US, the better it will be for them.  Cuba is a great home base for Russia, China, India, etc to have a strategic base in that region of the world.  Close to both North and South America.  Cuba is receptive to investment and influence.

From what I've read BRICS is only a concept at this time. There are no current agreements in place. That phase is yet to come and the chatter is that China is going to do everything it can to ensure it's at the top of the food chain when those agreements are drawn.  Whoever Cuba deals with what is certain is that the benefits will not trickle down to the citizens who need it most.
