Non Cuban Double Coronas

Since the price hikes with Cubans I've been diving into the non Cuban world, which has been quite fun and a bit of a revelation. I've found some gems that aren't better or worse so much as different and are equally enjoyable. 

My favourite size is the double corona so I was just wondering if people who enjoy NC's can recommend anything in this size worth trying?

fuente opus x double corona is nice when you can find them, which isn't all the time.

There aren't very many true double coronas in the NC world.

I'm a huge Double Corona fan and I've found that NC 'Double Coronas' vary widely (e.g. Padron 1926 No. 1 is listed as a DC at 6 7/8 x 54 vs the standard cuban DC at 7 5/8 x 49). I'd recommend the following sticking more with the Cuban DC sizes:

1. Davidoff Anniversario Double R - very creamy and the lead of the Anniversario line from Davidoff - never had a bad one
2. Ashton VSG Spellbound - more powerful but balanced cigar with Ecuadorian sun grown wrappers giving it a kick
3. Liga Privada T52 Doble Corona - huge smoke generator but great flavour if not a bit powerful, lots of pepper
4. AVO Improvisation LE 2021 - spectacular smoke (medium) that has a broad range of flavours, great example of a cigar that evolves

Mi Querida Triqui Traca No. 764 or the black Shakakhan;

Oliva Serie V Churchill Extra;

Padron 64 diplomatico maduro;

San Cristobal(paradise outside USA) - monumento;

The tabernacle broadleaf or havana seed double Corona

Ah mate, this is what started this search. My favourite DC is the RA gigantes and this whilst a bit different, matched it in flavour profile and made me think gee probably don't need Cubans after all. My sister is in the states at the moment and I've told her whatever she can find, buy.

Love Davidoff but never tried the Anniversario lineup as told it's extremely mild but you give me confidence to give it a whirl. Loved the T52 robustos from LP, especially with 3 years age, so will give that another go and I'll see if I can find the others, thank you!

I know we would love to do a small batch DC "Pilot" late this year/early 2024.

Small batch simply because the DC is a format that simply doesn't fit too many peoples lives. Still, Hamlet's favourite cigar and the one he cut his teeth on is the Partagas Lusitania. I believe we could make a cracking example in 10's and maybe a few 50 wheels.

I'd second the DE Liga Privada no. 9 and T52 DC's. Frankly, for both of these lines, I've found the DC to be the best vitola, which is not what I'd expected.

The Cuban prices are now ridiculous and I have mainly bought NC`s over the last 8 -10 months.

I would have to say that I don't think NC`s match the Cubans in taste, but they are more consistent and an enjoyable smoke.

Yes please. I don't buy DC regularly but if you did short runs of DCs and Salomones in 10s I'd find more time for DCs, esp at Nudies pqr

Which wrapper are you referencing? I thought the Corojo 99 wasn’t as good as the Habano.

Shortly after this article was published, Pete Johnson informed halfwheel that he had changed the wrapper leaf on the Tatuaje Escasos to a Nicaraguan corojo 99 shade wrapper, and that any cigars from a box dated April 2020 or later will have that leaf, including the two new sizes. The project had originally been launched with an Ecuadorian habano rosado claro wrapper, which is what was referenced in the original version of the story. He added that the new Nicarguan corojo 99 wrapper and the previous Ecuadorian habano rosado claro use the same color selection.

I’ve had both wrappers and have had great experiences with each one. I feel the newer blend is a tad bit stronger.

Many new world cigars out there that are just as tasty if not more tasty.

Haven’t had it in DC size but have to say Foundation belted it out of the park on their Havana seed line.

Ring gauge is off on a couple of these:

Cheap - LFD 1994 Mambo, Fuente RSG King T (can't go wrong w/ any of the larger sun grown line, all in that $10 range )

Not so cheap - God of Fire Aniversario 54 or Carlito churchill

Thanks for this I am here only 2 years into my cigar journey so I'm agnostic to Cubans or non Cubans however I find that Cubans are hard to get and I'm more testing the non Cubans , if you have personal favs please keep posting I wanna try them all

A lot of great recommendations here but most seem to be close to the price of Cubans. Here’s a more budget friendly one that I love, Churchill rather than a true double corona but the Illusione 888 is phenomenal, both the Churchill and the SLAM.
