MoeFOH Posted October 11, 2022 Posted October 11, 2022 MoeFOH's Movie of the Week 🎥 Each week we're going to spotlight a movie... be it a classic, new release, hidden gem, or outright turd... and open it for discussion: i.e. post up your favourite quotes, clips, memories... or dive deeper and give us a critique on why you think it's great, overrated, or a complete train wreck... And finally score it for us... All contributors go into a monthly prize draw for a 3-cigar sampler! PM me with suggestions if there's a movie you want to nominate for next week's discussion. Week #31: L.A. Story Moe says: Thanks to @Ken Gargett for the suggestion this week. This is one of my favourite movies of all-time. It encapsulates and showcases all that makes up Steve Martin's genius. Flat out brilliant stuff, in my opinion. I assume LA residents might appreciate it on a deeper level... would be interesting to know... Over to you... How do you rate it? Favourite scenes? Best moments?... etc, and so on... post 'em up!! Give us your score out of 10!
Ken Gargett Posted October 11, 2022 Posted October 11, 2022 brilliant stuff (and may i say a great choice). not sure i can add to my thoughts from when i made the suggestion - "LA Story". a little bit out of left field and seems to have been forgotten these days - i had forgotten it and it had been a fave. but for me, steve martin's masterpiece. if i may try and describe it, steve martin meets gabriel garcia marquez meets 80s LA meets rushdie's midnight's children set in the USA with a dose of shakespeare. a bit of SM's whackiness plus genuine humour (the coffee ordering scene and steve martin meeting with patrick stewart trying to book the top new restaurant, L'Idiot. priceless). a great cast with amazing cameos. victoria tennant melted every bloke's heart back then and sarah jessica parker was fabulous. a real feel good finish and who doesn't love a magical talking road sign. for me, a neglected classic. what is not to love? 10! 1
Fuzz Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 I love the coffee scene! A very underrated film, but an absolute gem. 1
Tdm_86 Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Well, this brought back some memories. I haven’t seen this one in over 20 years. Must revisit soon. I only remember bits and pieces. 1
Doctorossi Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 I'm going to go 8/10. This one always satisfies. 1
Capn_Jackson Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 I love these late 80’s/early 90’s Steve Martin flicks. Quaint and not too overdone, if a little light on development. Great popcorn stuff. The scene at the ATM always cracks me up. It’s so quick, and just interjected into the middle of their conversation. There are few who could pull it off that comically and naturally, besides Steve Martin. ”Hi my name’s Bob and I’ll be your robber.” ”Hi, how are you?” ”Thank you very much.” 1
