Popular Post williamthewolf Posted September 12, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 12, 2022 Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo des Dieux — BUM FEB 14 Cigar courtesy of my good friend and whisky tasting/smoking buddy @wailbait Had a dram of the mild Hazelburn for the cold draw but then switched to water as to not influence the cigar too much for this review. Minimal straight cut, just took the top cap off. Easy clean cold draw of bright cedar and tobacco. 1/3- Sweet cedar. Twang. Salted toast. Also tangy on the tongue — a metallic tanginess. Dry. Some sort of sweet cream — but like actual dairy cream, not like Epi 2 cream. Maybe unflavoured yogurt. Less sweet now…savoury cream as well? 2/3- In comes a cereal note. Power ramping up a bit. More of the same flavours just more pronounced. Also: toasted tobacco, leather. 3/3- Getting stronger but flavours are now more muddled. Smoked it right to the band and then things turned south. No point in taking it past that when it’s been so pleasant up til now. The cigar peaked at the mid to end of the second third. The first third was interesting though. Flavours were carefully unfolding. It’s a good cigar to review because nothing was straight forward, at least to me. The profile of this stick is on the brighter side and these sorts of flavours are hard for me to pick up. My typical is Partagas and Monte. Those marcas brings easily identifiable flavours to the table. This Hoyo, more so than any other Hoyo I’ve had, required a good deal of analysis on my part. The burn was relatively straight. Any wonkiness was most likely due to the wind when lighting it. Overall the cigar was good. I like it even more for the pleasant challenge it presented in trying to figure it out. It’s subtle and layered. A contemplative smoke for me. I’m thankful to have been able to try a discontinued cigar of this age too! Shoutout to @wailbait for this fine treat!!!! I’d rate it B/B+ or 87-88 out of 100 for me. But I can easily see this being as high as a 91 for someone whose palate is trained to understand more delicate and nuanced flavours. Tdm_86 Posted September 12, 2022 Posted September 12, 2022 Nice review! Sadly, I smoked my last one of these years ago. Your review makes me want to start looking for a box. 1

What's nice is, if you do find a box, it will most certainly at least have 8 years on them already!
targa88 Posted September 13, 2022 Posted September 13, 2022 Great preview, pictures and combo. Unfortunate that they are no longer available 1
brutusthebuckeye Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 Nice review. I smoked my last one from a 2006 box about 3 months ago. Absolutely incredible!!! 1

Fuzz Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 My cab of '03 Des Dieux is smoking wonderfully, as @JohnS can attest. I have yet to touch my '13 or '14 DD cigars. 4

It was on another level. That box was hit and miss with some very tightly rolled sticks. Got them from Czar aka FoH back around early 2008. Smoked thru 3/4 of the box within a few years. The last few I had looked and felt real tight. The one I kept for last looked and felt like a tent peg. I fired that thing up thinking it would barely draw and it was perfect. I don’t review or rate cigars but that was an easy 96-97 point cigar for me. 1

With them being discontinued and prices today I won’t be tracking any down to see if they could achieve that high standard again lol.
