Mostafa Posted April 8, 2022 Posted April 8, 2022 I find a discrepancy in the weights of half corona & petit corona vitolas on the forum here compared to CCW . Any explanation? Which should be the correct weight?
ATGroom Posted April 8, 2022 Posted April 8, 2022 The weights Rob has listed on the forum I believe are the official weights provided to him by Pacific Cigar. When I first added weights to CCW I used the same source. It had a few odd things in it like different weights between Marevas and Petit Coronas and so on. I later was able to get the list of weights directly from Habanos, which is what CCW uses now. They seem to be generally 'better' in my view. Less odd things, anyway. The truth is neither can be considered 'accurate' to an individual cigar, as there is a lot of variance between overfilled, underfilled etc. 4

After 2 months rest some smoke better than others. When I weigh them before smoking the ones that are the correct weight usually smoke good, the ones that are too heavy are usually tight & smoke bad. I have a box of HUHC that is too tight and bitter when I weighed the cigars they are below the weight on CCW yet they smoke like wet cigars (too tight, bitter & with a long tapered amber). When I checked the weight on the forum it should be much lower which makes perfect sense. I also noticed a difference on the weight of the mille fleurs which on the other hand smoke perfect at the higher weight published by CCW. Just trying to find an explanation to my observations.

In general wetter cigars will weigh more than the same cigars when dry. But some of the effects are directly due to the moisture content and have nothing to do with the weight. On the other hand some cigars are overpacked with tobacco and significantly overweight regardless of the moisture content (cigars that are 25% or 30% or more overweight) and will almost invariably be plugged. I haven't done the math lately but basically I think the variance in cigar weight due to the amount of tobacco (from -15% to +35% or so of the official weight) is greater than the change due to moisture content (9% to 15%).
ATGroom Posted April 8, 2022 Posted April 8, 2022 I had put the differences between FOH's (Pacific's) weights and CCW's (Habanos') down to someone making an error when the list changed format, or else maybe Pacific having a less up-to-date version of Habanos' list. It's also possible that Pacific observed that certain cigars were consistently below the Habanos weight and "corrected" their list. In any event, it's not the ideal weight. The intention is really just for them to be used by distributors when calculating tax / freight. At best it would be average weight, although I don't know how much time anybody really spent on calculating them.

GVan Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 I tend to weigh about 50% of my cigars - depending on how they look and feel. Heavyweights or very firm cigars go back in the box with a label to "hold". The variability in a single box can be amazing. See my post below. 3 boxes of Boli PC's that should weigh ~ 8.46 gm's that went from 7.0 gm's all the way up to 11.2 gm's. I still haven't finished the "experiment" because the heavy weight box is still sitting in my long-term storage aging away. I probably won't touch them for at least another 1 to 2 years. When I was new in this hobby, I obsessed over learning all that I could. Now I'm a lot calmer about overweight and underweight cigars. I tend to smoke the underweights early (ROTT to 2 years old) and just leave the heavyweights alone (>4 years) to gracefully age. I believe that by the time I smoke them they will be phenomenal cigars that are much closer to ideal weight (but probably still a little over-filled). They may take a little prodding with a PerfectDraw but, I would rather smoke an overweight cigar than a "wind tunnel". 1
