El Presidente Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 I knew this would happen. You buy one chanisaw and people start asking questions about wood. Those who know me also know that the following applies when it comes to my relationship with power tools So, please help this lovely person out. Part of his email below " ....there simply isn't a supply of Spanish cedar in Singapore and suitable mahogany is ridiculously priced. I have found a supply of beautiful aged and finished natural banboo in cutting board thick sheets. You showed a picture the other day of an old style cigar chest. That is what I am trying to replicate. Rob do you know of any reason why I can't build a large humidor out of bamboo?"
NSXCIGAR Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 I've seen bamboo used for humidors but always with an internal lining of Spanish cedar. That would at least keep the amount needed to a minimum. From what I understand, bamboo can shrink and warp significantly under high moisture conditions, although I don't know if ~65% rH would be considered high enough. Bamboo can also be somewhat odorous, and getting it wet or moist may release undesirable aromas. It also doesn't "conduct" moisture as well as Spanish cedar meaning less rH stability. The only other wood I've seen used in a humidor internally is Honduran mahogany. OP might want to look into that. 2
Nevrknow Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 ^ this. Nailed it. You "can". Should you? Kind of like " I can drive with my feet." Can you? Yes. Should you? No. 2
