williamthewolf Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 Hi everyone, After after receiving a box yesterday (NOT from out host), one stick has a little nick or hole. Two very knowledgeable people on here told me it’s most likely fine but it was suggested to me to ask the community their opinion. The cigar and the box is quarantined as of now. My questions are: Is this stick victim of beetles? Does the box need to be frozen? Is my wineador contaminated as I had the box in there (closed) for about an hour or two before I noticed alleged hole? The hole is not deep (doesn’t go any deeper than the wrapper) and no fine brown powder could be found in box or produced when taping cigar over piece if white paper. I’ll take the community’s lead on this one and do as advised. Thank you! W Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
smbauerllc Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 Never had beetles in 15 years of smoking Cigars without freezing, but its my understanding from reading and seeing pictures that beetle holes are near perfectly round, which yours really isn't. My non expert opinion is that its damage, not beetles. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk 1 1
williamthewolf Posted September 29, 2021 Author Posted September 29, 2021 That seems to be the consensus. Ive never seen a beetle hole myself in person. Reading about them recently got me paranoid. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
smbauerllc Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 I have had a number of Cigars with very similar holes and have never had beetles. My guess is that it got poked by a stem during manufacturing Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk 1 1
Timothy556 Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 It is not a beetle hole. Check out the pictures in another recent thread here. You are good. Freeze your cigars anyway. 2
djrey Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 Def looks like damage to me and not that of a beetle. I have received one cigar that had a beetle hole in in and it was a perfect circular hole that goes directly into the cigar. Your photos look like nothing more than wrapper damage. 2 1
Popular Post JohnnyO Posted September 29, 2021 Popular Post Posted September 29, 2021 The beetle holes I have seen are almost perfectly round. The hole you have is at a vein, beetles would not likely chew through there. Your cigar is roughed-up further up the cigar, so it probably was damaged in transit. If you are concerned about the box you can put it through the freeze/fridge process. Once you are done with that, you can empty out the box and shake it outside so any unwanted bits are on your lawn and not in your house. If you are overly concerned, clean out the humi as well. This never hurts as we all should do it from time to time. John 5 1
Chas.Alpha Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 Not a bug hole. Beetles come at you from the inside and their holes are as round as a drill bit, nasty bastards... 2 1
Nino Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 Most def NOT a beetle hole. Johnny O explained it quite correctly. Now this is a beetle ... CAVE tunnel system with a grinning lunching bastard ... 🙂 2 1

Fox Sterlingworth Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 Concur with others on damage not beetles. Perfect round holes, usually in more than one stick per box, and if multiple holes in one stick, they’ll look like someone sprayed a tiny machine gun into it. Freeze em and you’ll be worry free anyhow. 2 1
williamthewolf Posted September 29, 2021 Author Posted September 29, 2021 Thank you all. I can rest easy and enjoy them now. By the way, with freezing, can I put the whole box in the ziplock or should I put them in bag loose?

I'd prefer the loose cigar in a Ziplock solution but that is just me... 2

Hopefully I can differentiate with ease the next time I see something resembling a puncture/hole in my cigar wrapper. Appreciate you and everyone else for diagnosing the issue so thoroughly! 1
