Malaysia's women's affairs ministry has apologised for campaign posters urging women to avoid nagging their husbands during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Malaysian government has apologised after telling women to speak with a cartoon cat voice and avoid nagging their husbands during coronavirus lockdowns, a move that sparked a sexism row.

The women's affairs ministry issued advice on how to avoid domestic conflicts during the partial lockdown, which began on March 18, with a series of online posters with the hashtag translating as #WomenPreventCOVID19.

One of the campaign posters depicted a man sitting on a sofa and asked women to refrain from being "sarcastic" if they needed help with household chores.

Avoid nagging your husband, another poster said, but use humour or imitate the infantile voice of Doraemon, a blue robot cat from Japan that is hugely popular across Asia.

The ministry also urged women to dress up and wear makeup while working from home.

"We apologise if some of the tips we shared were inappropriate and touched on the sensitivities of some parties," the ministry's women development department said in a statement.

Sounds like solid advice to maintain civility.

I’d get away with that.

It sounds plausible enough tonight, but wait until tomorrow. Wait for the common sense of the morning....

They didn’t wait for the common sense to kick in....

Well I'm NOT going to apologize for forwarding on to my wife. I could go with fewer pajamas until 2pm, and a stitch or two of makeup every few days from her! Haa haa. She made a grocery run for an older relative of mine the other day and had to get publicly presentable and the kids and I were both shocked (for different reasons obviously).

Kidding aside, I think there is some wisdom to their unbelievably tone-deaf and chauvinistic campaign. We should be comfortable while adjusting to the new reality of our social lives, especially if it lowers stress, but I also think it's healthy to make an effort to consciously break out of the lethargy that can come along with it. If that means dressing up, or increasing at-home exercise, or treating the day like you were going out in public, I think that's important too! End of the day though, to each their own.

I told my wife she reminded me of the newscasters in the original Batman movie when all the beauty products were tainted.  I think the knot that's swelling on my head should go away fairly soon if I keep ice on it.
