The trip through Africa and Asia thirty years ago – seems like a million lifetimes ago.

A friend just sent me a pic from it.

This was in northern Pakistan. We were heading that way. As dicey as it all was, what used to really scare the crap out of me was when you had to pass a car going the other way. We saw more than a few burnt out wrecks lower down.

Now, I don’t think you’d get me driving along there at the point of a gun. Not that there was any shortage of those in the area.

What road is this? I'm gonna buy that new Pikes Peak Bentley in the innovation thread and test it out on this road. What a way to break it in!

Nature sure is amazing. To think that the mountain is formed like that because an ocean used to brush against it is beyond imaginable.

Wow. That takes “carved out of stone” to a whole new level.

there were endless roads like this and even worse all through the region. you just have to hang on and think that people have driven it before so you'll be okay.

You’ve got balls. I don’t think I could stand being a passenger there.  I’d be doing meditative breathing the whole time. I thought the road to Hana was bad; not even in the same ballpark

the other side to it is that you really do not have much choice. the truck i was on was headed that way. do you get out, get your backpack and crap and just start walking - back or ahead? nowhere to sleep. nowhere to get food. for many many miles. you're on the truck and you've little choice.

I get it but applaud you for making the journey. Lots of peril there. Glad you weren’t in one of the heaps below and are able to share your show and tell. ?

when you are in your twenties, you think you are bulletproof. if only that was the most stupid thing i did back then. sadly, i doubt it makes the top ten.

my bro-in-law made an interesting point. one of his kids, my nephew, a couple of years younger than i was when i did this, is working the snowfields in canada and has been over there for about 18 months. having a ball but they hear from him every day or two. calls, skypes, texts, videos, instagrams, emails etc. he could easily be down the road. when i studied in london, a rare call home and letters once a fortnight or so. when i took off travelling, my folks literally did not know what hemisphere i was in for six months.  i'd send an occasional letter but calls were impossible. from africa, no reverse charges and i could not afford to call. would have cost a month's travelling.

different world - well, i guess not only being able to travel through northern pakistan but being very welcome there confirms that. try it today!
