How was the Amon Ra? Got a few crates stowed away somewhere, haven’t tasted it for ages.?

that was one of the later wines of the lunch hence my recollection may not have been as sharp as required but i seem to remember it was pretty good.

the first bottle of Selosse and the magnum of Gaja were the absolute superstars.

Where is the picture of the dog Ken????

It was a big lunch. Ken filled me in yesterday.

On reflection the doberman turned out to be a stuffed  rabbit. Thats why it was so placid.

Gaja is still a bit underrated in the wider world, thanks be.  When wannabe wine snobs go "ooh" and "aah" over Sassicaia and Ornellaia, I would always go with a Gaja ....

And the '98 Winston Churchill is stonkingly good!

This line-up will take some beating...

i did expect the 98 sir W to be a bit better. seen the 02 and 08 in mags recently and both were streets ahead.

stunned you say that about gaja, but i can only really speak from a local perspective. most serious wine people i know here would opt for the top gaja ahead of most of the supertuscans. perhaps not the 85 sass but in general. i will keep an eye on that. i may have misread.

It may be local perspective -- my experiences are largely European.  I definitely noted that in many restaurants, I can get two or three bottles of the Gaja for the same price as one of the big-name Tuscans -- not always a reliable guide to quality, to be sure, but it reflects desirability.
