Popular Post Ken Gargett Posted December 14, 2019 Popular Post Posted December 14, 2019 an old school mate invites me along to his annual doctors' chrissy lunch. we all bring a bottle or two. and this year, one of the blokes who could not make it sent along a box of 2005 esplendidos. cracking day all round. (afterwards, back at one of the guy's places, he had the most brilliant doberman - a former australian champion dog, it was the most gentle almost timid dog imaginable - sort of a ferdinand the bull dog). 18
Hookmaker Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 How was the Amon Ra? Got a few crates stowed away somewhere, haven’t tasted it for ages.?

Wailbait Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Good show. 08 Gaja. Looks bonkers. Basically murderers row.

Gaja is still a bit underrated in the wider world, thanks be. When wannabe wine snobs go "ooh" and "aah" over Sassicaia and Ornellaia, I would always go with a Gaja .... And the '98 Winston Churchill is stonkingly good! This line-up will take some beating...

This line-up will take some beating... i did expect the 98 sir W to be a bit better. seen the 02 and 08 in mags recently and both were streets ahead. stunned you say that about gaja, but i can only really speak from a local perspective. most serious wine people i know here would opt for the top gaja ahead of most of the supertuscans. perhaps not the 85 sass but in general. i will keep an eye on that. i may have misread.

It may be local perspective -- my experiences are largely European. I definitely noted that in many restaurants, I can get two or three bottles of the Gaja for the same price as one of the big-name Tuscans -- not always a reliable guide to quality, to be sure, but it reflects desirability.
