La Gloria Cubana Question

Recommended Posts

I recently became a fan of La Gloria Cubana as Medaille d'Or No. 4 showed the great flavour notes in thin format (I thought I would struggle to Panetela but went very well). Is Medaille d'Or No. 2 in the same league as Medaille d'Or No. 4? I have never heard any news about Medaille d'Or No. 2 for long time so unable to compare it with Medaille d'Or No. 4 (I am afraid that Medaille d'Or No. 2 will meet the same fate as Saint Luis Rey Serie A which is officially discontinued in 2018)...

P.S. I personally believe that thin RG suits La Gloria Cubana perfectly and because of that, I wish that HSA will reform La Gloria Cubana as long skinny cigar exclusive marca instead of shrinking it ?.

If you want to try something that is reminiscent of the old school LGC flavor profile, check out the erdm choix supreme.

Mdo2s are great, but hard to find.

Thanks! By the way, which Corona Extra better, SLR Regios or VR Famosos? I heard they are good Corona Extra cigars ☺️

I think MD2s will be officially nixed soon. And honestly, I think the marca will be gone. Maybe just for use with ER releases. Sad though, because it is in my top 3. Can't get enough of them

SLR Serie is still ilsted as current production. Hasn't been officially discontinued as far as I'm aware

Cuz Serie A (and DC) also not been around since 2016... and El Pres posted about the fate of Serie A in this year if I am not mistaken.

P.S. At least Ramon Allones and Por Larranaga are not that in severe danger which is good for me (RASS, RAG, PLPC, PL Picadores).

SLR DC are not officially discontinued, but! They only came in cabs of 50, if I'm not mistaken. So I understand why they have not been seen in quite awhile.

I think 2019 discontinuation list will be quite extensive. I'm not looking forward to it

I was lucky enough to get into cigars while LGC still had a full house of formats on regular production. Or at least boxes of the cancelled formats were easily accessed. The MdO 2 is definitely a great cigar to have in your rotation. Especially if you could keep your hands off them for a while.

Everything about this cigar screams classic. The Dalia format, the 898 presentation and the blend; make for an elegant classical Cuban experience. There is nothing bad to be said about this cigar.

One thing to have in mind though, in my opinion, the true character of the cigar truly comes out after 10 years of ageing.

Much Agrred! I also like La Gloria Cubana a lot due to its flavour and potential! One of the CC brands which must not be missed if it is on 24 24 list!

I thought they were nixed like a decade ago?  I haven't No. 1 or No. 2 for many years.  They were my most smoked cigars when available.  Haven't seen either in years.

They are officially still not listed as discontinued, but there are another half-dozen in the same boat, where they haven't been seen in 2-3 years now, or longer.

MdO 1's and 2's should be a Regional; would be very successful.  So many have missed these cigars.  Once they dried up, I was like "oh shit".  Now I savor my remaining boxes.  They've become too rare to smoke as I know they cannot be replaced.  I hate when as cigar takes that direction.   Same thing with Upmann Monarchs and Punch Royal Selection. Both were very regular cigars and well priced.

I can't comment on the regios, as i haven't smoked them. I've only smoked the one famoso, even. @awkwardPause gifted it to me, and has experience with a much broader range of current sticks than I do. He might be able to offer a fair comparison of the two cigars.

I definitely miss the mdo2 and tainos. I would be happy if they were brought back in any capacity whatsoever

Absolutely! And congrats for finding and appreciating the No.4!

When asked where the difference between those two is - I'd be hard beaten to give you a clearcut answer, apart from obvious format differences. The MdO No.2 is a wonderful cigar, my all-time favourite and the very first Cuban I smoked (as far as memory serves). And I guess that's also what imprinted me on the format, forever. Being asked, I'd be spontaneously inclined to say there is more complexity and a more pronounced evolution in the No. 2, more smoke volume for sure. But then again.... - each time I am smoking a great No. 4, I think, heck, that really IS a complex smoke! The No. 4 is a staple of mine, love them, young or aged, different with time going by, but I equally like them. Quality is always there, today's production is immaculate and the blend hasn't changed much over the years (advertising the MdO4 wherever I can in the hope that the last of the line will stay with us! always bearing a sort of last-chance-to-see feeling). Both these cigars are maturing gracefully while all four of the (former) line are surprisingly similar in profile. Sheding a bit of their earthiness when young and then developing great complex herbal, even floral notes with hints of "umami", somehow. Elegant and refined. Really difficult to describe, since when a great specimen is showing all of its facets it is almost impossible to dissect the experience.

So, just try them if you can get hold of any No.2s (not been in production after 2014), you won't be disappointed.

And - true, very well said! It is a shame and a misery what HSA is doing to this particular marca.

Hopefully Rob will have have some psp boxes of mdo4’s for us in the new year? I would stock up. I too wish they would re invest in the brand.

I really want to get PSP boxes of MDO 4 also! Hope that they are available in the new year ☺️.

This makes me really want to get MDO 2 as soon as possible since I think the blend of LGC and size of Dalias makes it excellent relaxation cigar at nighttime! I am really upset that marcas like La Gloria Cubana are just being faded into history without revamping ?!

I think I will try both of cigars and see which one would do it for me... ☺️

Sounds like a good idea! Boxes of each!

Also I'll take this opportunity for a shameless plug. The cheap petit corona-esque partagas' are all great. Petit coronas especiales, habaneros, aristocrats, super partagas, mille fleurs. Definitely not the same floral profile as the LGCs, but I think you'll likely find them to your liking. Plus at only ~$100/box, you won't feel shorted if you don't immediately love them. They do age well, though, so revisiting them later will likely bring favorable results.

? They just came out with a new regional, so I don't see them going anywhere. They've been selling really well too. Maybe officially discontinue everything and keep Md4. I could also see them coming out with a new reg prod though. Maybe a robusto or similar. Seems to be the trend.

I think HSA will do the same thing to LGC as they did to Quai d'Orsay if they decide to add big RGs more (No 50 and 54).

MdO 3 & 4 are like runner up's to 1 & 2.  They should've kept 1 & 2 and dropped 3 & 4 if they had to make any cuts.

Wonder how did MdO 1 taste since it discontinued on 2010 permanently...

Same as No. 2.  Both No 1 and 2 were very consistent in high quality construction.  Never had a plugged one.

If they do, they will sell on par with the QD as well. Still haven't figured out if they are limiting production of the QD = which makes them hard to get, or they are just hard to get because people keep flipping them or buying as much as possible and holding them
