Stump89 Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 In keeping with the theme of some recent shark posts, I found this gem as a headline today. Good thing this bad boy is extinct... Hopefully. https://www.cnet.com/google-amp/news/teeth-from-a-mega-shark-twice-the-size-of-a-great-white-found-in-australia/
joeypots Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 Sharks are a big thing right now on Cape Cod. The effect of the Marine Mammal wildlife Protection Act that out lawed the hunting of seals showed results about 20 years ago and the populations of seals have now fully recovered. There are something like 15000 or more seals between Watch Hill Rhode Island Gloucester Ma that weren't there 15 years ago. Loads of white sharks have come to feast on the seals and it seems they tell their buddies about the easy pickings here when they head south for the winter. More come every year. A mile from my home there are stretches of beech that are being closed almost every day. The white sharks are way cool. And big. B I G big.
Ken Gargett Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 try this. http://www.viralthread.com/monster-shark-bites-great-white-in-half-off-australian-coast/ by the way, for non-aussies, stradbroke is the island a kilometre or two off brisbane. but they say that the sharks now are way smaller than a while back. there used to be a whaling station and apparently it used to attract massive tigers and whites.
Ken Gargett Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 and this one was up just north of brizzy where we have the annual fishing trip. and it was on the inside of the island in the quiet water, rather than on the east coast.

This seriously looks like it should be in a Jaws movie.

Is that the notorious shark hunter Vic Hislop? I remember he caught a GW shark off Phillip Island in Victoria that was the heaviest ever caught and was 22 feet long. Not far from where I used to surf. I remember because our caravan was 22 feet long and slept 6.

I remember because our caravan was 22 feet long and slept 6. that is Vic. and i think that is the one he stuffed and used for his shark show. and recently sold on gumtree for 30K! i remember the pics of that one off philip island. looked like some sort of freak monster from a horror pic. looked simply too big to be able to do anything. but i suspect that when in the water, it might have been a touch more athletic. back in the 70s, i was on a boat at the edge of the swains on the barrier reef, about 100 miles from land. myself and two deckies were cleaning fish. we looked over and there was a hammerhead. the three of us had differences in our estimates of the size - it was quite close to the surface for a long time and swam next to the, fortunately, large boat we were on. the longest estimate was 30 foot long. the shortest was 25 foot long. the third estimate was, coincidently, 25 to 30 foot. none of us had ever seen anything like it. it was just after 'jaws' was out and we all agreed it dwarfed that minnow! i can still see it clear as day. 1
