this is a bit of a spoiler to a forthcoming kenfessions but i won't go into the cigar and drinks. suffice to say that all my plans for a bucketload of work yesterday were disturbed as i spent the afternoon trying to get monty, the local 12 foot carpet python, out of the garage. unsuccessfully. he is going to give my postman a hell of a shock today. full story in the kenfessions. today's problem is an irishman (no names, stuart) sending texts about some 7s rugby competition - apparently ireland won something so no doubt there will be a week's holidays for all, but seriously, 7s rugby is the sauvignon blanc of sport.

You Aussies and your pets are a wild bunch! And judging by the open slats for walls in your garage, I guess it’s futile to even try to keep the critters out? Yikes.

So do you sleep with the python loose in the garage or what?

i don't sleep in the garage and there is a door/wall between us. but he was amazingly docile. i would prefer him outside but i am way more worried about the browns in the area. and this snake will eat them if it gets a chance. i just don't want to accidently stand on it and get bitten.

correct. but it tried many times to fit through the slats and was too big. but there are other gaps it can get in and out. i often have a possum living in the corner of the garage and it may have smelt it. but the possum not to be seen (no bumps in monty so he didn't catch him).

On the bright side, at least you wont have a rodent problem for the foreseeable future.

i have been here a decade and i have never had a rodent problem.

well, my postie arrived and i was telling him about monty when we both jumped out of our skins. there he was, sunning himself on the railing next to us. anyway, col, my postie, suggested i ring the young kid from the nearby convention centre (he has discovered that people do not appreciate snakes at their weddings so he gets rid of them - not kills, just relocates). michael came straight around and into the box went monty, although there was a problem as he was simply too big for the snake catching device. i took some pics so will load later. he'll be let go reasonably nearby and we will find out if monty is a homing snake.

the interesting thing is that i assumed he must be the same snake as curled up under the balcony a few months ago. but on checking the pics, that one was much darker. very rare for two of that size to share the same territory so not sure what is happening. but no doubt another, hopefully slightly smaller, python will take its place soon.
