When I bought a couple of Padron Millennium back in '99, they were - at the time - the rarest and most expensive cigars I had, and that I could imagine ever having. So I decided that I would save them for only the most special occasions.

Just such an occasion arrived on Wednesday when my wife and I welcomed our first child, our daughter, Millicent Jewell.

So I'm enjoying my last quite evening at home while Mom and baby rest at the hospital, and taking the opportunity to dig into my humidor for the cigar that I've been saving for this day.

After 19 years of being shuffled through countless humidors, the Millennium doesn't have much of a cold aroma - just faint black tea and mild dried flowers.

An open draw gives early flavors that, to my palate, are characteristic of high quality, well-aged tobacco. Truffle, aged steak. There's a hint of baking spice in the aroma. It's certainly extremely rounded and mellow, but not at all dead or over-aged.

The second third picks up some spice and a bit of the sweetness from the aroma hits the palate. It creates a mild kind of candied ginger flavor.

The final third passes through a phase in which white pepper dominates for just a bit. Then the truffle flavor re-emerges and combined with a wet black tea and sugar note.

This was a fantastic cigar, with distinct flavors that evolved over the course of the smoke, and a long oily finish. Certainly a fitting celebration of a joyous and life-changing occasion!

Congratulations! That cigar was definitely worth the wait!

Congratulations. Well done. Now buy a box of something special from MAY 18 when you get a chance. Smoke one every year on her birthday. The last few should carry you thru college graduations and such. All the best!

Congrats on your first born!!  Must have been such a cool moment.  But I would’ve done the same and think of what cigar I could smoke w/ “one more day” ???? ?

What are you saving them for?

Retirement?

50th Anniversary?

Mother in Law's funeral?

I say smoke 'em if you've got 'em!

I haven’t had the perfect occasion such as the birth of a child, congrats on that by the way!!! That’s exactly the type of event we save these epic smokes for! Perfect moment/perfect cigar.

LOL... I wasn’t actually “saving them”. I bought them in 1999. I was saving them at that point, but in 2003 I stopped smoking cigars. Not on purpose. I just lost interest. I owned a bar at that point. Closed bar in 2003 and put away all the cigars I had. I maintained them religiously, but had no desire to smoke them. After my father passed away this year, my interest reawakened. Didn’t even remember I had them till I started to sort through things a few months ago.

I also have a bunch of OpusX from the same time. Here I took a photo of my old one next to a new one...c796405f4955325000ba9e42550c9cf3.jpgb40ad65760818bd9d19d41829cfbf895.jpg

This had 25 likes, shouldn’t@Nekhyludov win the FRC competition? I believe this was one of the criteria for winning and the other was random? I could be wrong...

Great review and congratulations! @Nekhyludov

My wife and I welcomed our first child on May 27th! What a momentous occasion and a cigar that is well-suited for the event!

Now, what do I smoke? :)

Congrats, @Nekhyludov!  In my opinion, there’s no life event that rivals becoming a Dad, at least in my experience.  I would give up everything, cigars included, and even life itself for my girls.

You’re a lucky man!  I’d go back and relive those early days in a heartbeat.  Relish and enjoy every moment!
