Hi All. There is still a small part of my trip to the US (see thread below) that is in flux in my thoughts. I've got about 5 days before I head to Chicago on the 23rd of April where I haven't locked anything in. I'll be in Boston at that point, and I was thinking of touring around some of the better spots in Massachusetts--perhaps Cape Cod... Perhaps a turnaround diversion to Richmond, VA (a place that intrigues me for some reason)... I don't know...

So I thought I'd throw it open to those much more in the know than I. What recommendations do you have for me? (the only limitation is I don't want to venture too far, as I have to get to Chicago on the 23rd, and, let's face it, I'm going to be sick to the teeth of flying by the time this thing is over!)

Cheers,

Moe.

Richmond is good for some nice food, BBQ, and phenomenal beer (The Veil, Triple Crossing, The Answer - whether Randallized beers are really 'beers' is a separate conversation). Other than the beer [which can be matched by NE breweries], not much separates Richmond from any other average town, in my opinion.

Between futzing around Cape Cod and Richmond, go to the Cape for sure.

DC, on the other hand, is worth the trip. for example

Highly recommend checking out the Atlas Obscura for each city:

There are a ton of gems in there...

If you're not coming to Texas, then maybe give Nashville TN a thought. Entertainment, Food, Fun - Country Music Hall of Fame....You could even hit Nashville for the Country Music Hall of Fame and then on the way to Chicago make a stop in Cleveland for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...(at the risk of offending others...there is really no other reason to stop in Cleveland)

DC was definitely on my radar and this gives me plenty of food for thought. And your other comments back up my thoughts about staying put in Massachusetts and seeing what's what there. I have to say I'm leaning towards Cape Cod, at this stage. Thanks for the input.

Cheers!

Nashville... Another one I thought about diverting to; I've always heard nothing but good things about it. I'll bump it up the list and do some more research.

When in Boston check out trilliums beer garden downtown by the harbor fun venue, and if available Tree house brewings beer. There is a pub there that might have it and if you like local pubs bukowskis tavern might be right up your alley. I will stop there as I'm getting a thirst?

The cape in April will be a bit chilly and pretty quiet. I spend every summer up there.

I'd suggest you drive up the Maine coastline

Outside the box recommendation...

Cleveland.  If you like rock and roll, you'll enjoy the rock hall.  Beer fan?  Great lakes is great, and across the street from West side market, a beautiful indoor market.  The arcade has beautiful architecture, were home to the greatest player in the NBA, and it's a foodie's delight, tons of phenomenal restaurants.

Cleveland has "2 day stopoff" written all over it.  Cheap flights from Chicago.

Definitely do D.C. . . . there's a helluva circus in town currently :lookaround:   I've lived in D.C. and Richmond and both could easily fill 4 days, but D.C. will do it with much more excess; the Smithsonian museums alone would take you several weeks to do right.  The National Archives has some incredible stuff, the National Gallery has lots of Art . . . y'know . . . for Arts Sake  , you'll love touring the colonial stuff (Mount Vernon) and Georgetown and Harper's Ferry is an easy day trip or overnight.

I couldn't help myself when thinking about DC, just  did a weeks pub crawl there with the wife and had a great time. Great beer scene, sovereign is a Belgium restaurant a block from Georgetown tobacco great food and Belgium beers. Churchkey is a favorite good eats and 40 on tap. Meridian pint, blue jacket........ All had great food and beer and after a day of sightseeing (no better place)what more could one ask for. Having said that though two weeks chasing beer through New England was very nice as well... Oh and there is Maine. You know maybe you should grab the wife and stay a bit longer?

If you want REAL BBQ, then come to Texas. Best BBQ in the US bar none. Plus, everything is bigger in Texas!

Have briefly visited Texas before, and would love to again; sadly, that will have to be another trip.

Cheers!

That's grand... Thanks for the good oil. Bukowski's? Not after the poet Bukowski? I'm a fan. But, no, he was an LA cat. Still, if it's a local tavern I'll be interested no matter they call it.

Cheers!

Maine is looking like a bolter! Had not considered that one, but the idea appeals to me a great deal. Cold weather is welcome; it's pretty much hot as f*@k in Brisbane most of the time!

Cleveland had come into my considerations, but mainly as a baseball fan. The Indians have a cracking team at present. However, I'll get my fill of that in Boston (Red Sox fan). Agree it makes sense from the leg to Chicago perspective, so I'm going to keep it in the frame for now. R&R HOF has major appeal, too.

DC's getting a lot of love in this thread. Seriously considering it.

Cheers for the info!

Acadia National Park is amazing, but weather that time of year is questionable.

As I said to Fitzy, this one intrigues me a great deal. Weather is a consideration, of course; I don't mind it cold, just not crappy and miserable.

Cheers!

I second / third / whatever the Washington D.C. vote.  Awesome town, tons of great history, great food scene and a few great spots for cigars as well.

DC continues to firm in the market.

Cheers!

If it’s cold weather you are after we can accommodate your needs in Minnesota

Maine  ahhh, in portland allagash, Austin st, shipyard brewing and a tiny pub by the water mash tun, then down the street by the water to J's oysters for lobster stew. oh yea and  head a short bit up to Freeport and checkout LL bean very cool,  then you will need to stop for refreshments at Maine brewing just down the street.

DC is an absolute must. first choice.

a great many other fantastic places to visit but DC is number 1.

Thanks, Ken. Seems to be a great deal of support for it. Your #1 reason why?
