the world's greatest rarest rum

Recommended Posts

i know we have discussed the isla del tesoro before but i did the full story for Quill & Pen - a site for those who love seriously expensive watches. https://quillandpad.com/2018/02/26/isla-del-tesoro-worlds-rarest-greatest-rum/

the piece also got picked up by therumlab.com which was nice. although no one mentioned that to me.

if anyone is interested in the rum, if you look in the comments, you'll see a link to a place you can actually source a bottle.

Hi Ken,

I am sure that I saw a bottle in the humidor of the LCDH at the Melia Cohiba in early February.  Could not tell you if it was full or just for show, but it definitely was the same bottle.  I'm pretty sure it was there in 2016 as well, so perhaps it's just to decorate the humidor!

I found a bottle at one of the hotels on the Paseo de Marti (Hotel Sevilla I think?) in February 2017. ad885cacfc8a99c3cbfe45d0b5cf7b23.jpg

I would have bought it if A) I could have paid with Plastic and thought I would feel anything but disappointment after the first few sips (which I’m sure would be amazing, but the reality of the price tag would have set it!)

Just like any other liquor or cigars, the marketing and limited availability affect the pricing. It would be interesting to see a blind tasting with sub $100 rums

My go to rums are Papas Pilar 24 (roughly $40/bottle) and Eldorado 12 Year ($30/bottle).

However, I’ve been struggling to find the right cigars to pair with both of them lately. I found a sweetness in the Eldorado a few days ago, most likely caused by the spicy vodka sauce I was cooking/eating, which will probably change my cigar pairing approach going forward. I think it’s time to leave work and begin my “search”

@Ken Gargett So for someone who really doesn't drink but wants to see what a great rum is really about what would you recommend?

zacapa is pretty good at a lower price than this. the good havana clubs. mt gay extra old is really good value.

there are a heap of threads on this forum looking at rums at all levels.

For cuban rum, try the Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros; ~$50

For non cuban, try the Diplomatico Single Vinate 2002 ~$80

Awesome article!  I really enjoy your writing, as well as your choices for subject matter.  Helped me discover a rum I never knew existed, then the comments provide sources, it’s ideal!
