99call Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 Get your hot air gun going, and bring this beauty back to its best! $995 is steep for us here in the UK, as these cabs do come around quite often. let's hope someone in the US can bargain them down, and restore this bad boy Good luck guys and gals https://www.ebay.com/itm/232591004920?rmvSB=true
Coloniales Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 That is an insane price, unless you like the outer decor. I have bought a Cabanas Cab a couple of years back, of similar size, that had a dark lacquer on the outside.I got some great woodworkers to do it up. Looked great after, but a year later its gone dark again, the lacquer was too deep. This will be similar. Shame as inside this Punch Cab is nice. Realistic price would be $150 tops, for restoration as is. Keith.

Completely agree Keith, Im a objects conservator by trade, and whomever is selling this, you have to feel they are wrongly placing the value of the cabinet on the Chinoiserie, as thats what they collect. I'm not sure how many of these turn up in the US compared to the UK so maybe the $150 you mention should be upped a little, but not by much. To me this looks like a very poor attempt to mimic black lac, or Urushi lacquer. I have a feeling it will be done with bog standard paint by a hobbyist, and with a heat gun, it would come right off. Apart from that, the condition looks nice and sharp, i.e. shelves and locks. Always a shame when people paint stuff like this 1
