Indeed, they are brilliant critters. Got to see a couple of them relentlessly charging each other in a sort of rutting showdown. All the staff on the Island were brilliant

it is a beautiful shark though one might not feel that way if one was in the drink with it.

as a kid on a fishing trip off the barrier reef - we were on the edge of the swains so about 100 ks offshore - i remember i was cleaning some fish with the deckhands. all of sudden, something seemed odd. everything went quiet, even though there was not anything to go quiet. we looked over and there was a hammerhead taking the frames as they floated down. biggest thing i have ever seen. made that great white look juvenile. all of us gripped the edges a little tighter. this was around the time Jaws had come out and we all looked at us and all agreed that it was bigger than the shark in Jaws.

there are some very very big sharks out there.

Definitely hear where you are coming from Ken. And being totally honest, the nearest I've been to a shark has been at an aquarium. Your story is fascinating and can defo appreciate seeing one of those animals in the 'wild' flesh is something to behold. I suppose with all wildlife, respect is the word.

mate of mine ran the shark program in qld for many years (he is now head of the dept) and if anyone watches 'river monsters', he is the bloke who took jeremy wade out when he did the show on bull sharks in southeast qld. the stories he tells would chill your spine. he does not go in the water.

perhaps i should have added shark to the 'which is smarter' thread.

I've worked on platforms offshore for over 40 years now.... Hammerhead get big but have small mouths in proportion to say bulls, mako or tigers.
Twice in my time offshore, I have witnessed shark migrations that are so expansive you chill to the bone. So densely packed You could literally walk across them -- surrounded and they reach the horizon. Goes on for 2 or 3 days

Seeing that shark would be awesome.  That daredevil that fell 69 stories would have been better off swimming with the monster.
