I’m assuming this is happening because the cigar goes from a nice cozy environment and out into the 26 degree weather while it’s snowing(not directly in the snow) Last two nights in freezing temps both cigars the wrappers cracked and started to unravel. Storage is 65/65. Just wanted to confirm my thoughts

I’ve found it’s also the rate of transition from your humidor to the dry, cold outdoor.

wetting your cigar would help this time of year.

cold and dry equals brittle wrapper while inside your cigar is heat and moisture .

cigars swells, wrapper splits.

even so,26 degrees is brutal smoking.

I have an opposite challenge: humidor to hot and moist smoking environments (SE Asia) and again, it's the wrapper that suffers first.  Eventually the whole cigar will soak up humidity and get tight, but at first it's the wrapper that gets over humidified (at least in my humble theory).  Perhaps in any 'shock' environment change the wrapper is affecting faster than the filler.

Unfortunately, wrapper problems are a common issue for those of us in cold winter climates. Last winter temps got down to -8F here (-22C). Even in my ‘smoking shack’, the ventilation air from outside played hell with cigar wrappers. For me, this time of year the pipes get more use. In the spring cigars will come into the forefront again.

I had this problem the other night. I just smoked through it and it was still a great cigar. Change in humidity will cause this cracking ordeal. 8f984cdba3b7d606806a2a1ade7a1ec4.jpg

I smoked several cigars outside in 20F last night around a fire.  The smaller RG cigars, like under 40, held up very well.  The only weather related issue was with a 54 RG.

I believe that there was an entire thread dedicated to this concept.  I have done it on occasion and the cigar actually burned better.

When you take a cigar from a heated humidified environment out into a cold garage 30-40degrees F with virtually no humidity, sometimes the wrapper will crack or split. Happens sometimes to myself, but not always. A consequence of cold weather winter time smoking.

I usually pop my cigar out of the humidor if I know I'm going to smoke later in the evening and let it sit out and acclimate before I take it outside. Haven't really had a problem when it was super humid in the summer and cold now in Massachusetts.

My mancave humidity is around 40% right now. Inside the humidor iit is around 64%. I too have problems sometimes.

So I smoked a cigar that was dry boxed for 2 days out in the hot tub last night.  I had zero issues with cracking :)
