I could be wrong which I'm inclined to be most of the time but I think for the upcoming world cup there is one slot remaining.

And tonight or tomorrow at 4:00 am EST I guess, Australia vs Honduras in OZ.

Also Peru vs New Zealand in Peru at 9:15 pm. tonight.  Anyway should be very interesting,  Italy is out and the last time

they did not qualify was 60 years ago.  I guess new kids on the block these days.  Because I am a member of FOH

I'm rooting for the um the "Roo's" or not sure what the team is called but would like to see Australia win the last slot

for the world cup in Russia 2018.  Please forgive me but I'm not sure what they call the OZ team.  Any help all ears!

Australia have an impressive record at home, I think undefeated in their last 10 matches. Honduras really should have "made hay while the sun shone" during the first leg.

I think Peru had the better of their first leg and I would expect them to win against New Zealand at home.

i'm thinking of that game against iraq (or iran??) where we unravelled in the last 15 minutes and lost a spot we had in our grip. surely we are beyond that?

You're kidding, right? Our Men's teams (not just soccer, eg our cricket team losing to Bangladesh) have been known to hit rock bottom... then start digging.

hey, look at some of the rugby results over the years. men's hockey. i would not put any money on us tonight (mind you, nor do i particularly care). if we get there, our media will scream about how we are in the group of death. only no other country will think it is the group of death, because we are in it.

and then we will come up with all sorts of brave loser rubbish. or how we were dudded (remember the italian game? how embarrassing was that? they might have conned the ref for a late penalty but we played against 10 men almost all game, did not ever look like putting the ball in the net and only stayed in it because schwartzer had an absolute blinder at goalie. then we scream blue murder because of that penalty. mortifying).

In comparison to the top teams in the World Cup, the Australian Men's Football team, if they qualify for Russia 2018, would be making up the numbers. After all, they are currently ranked 43rd in the world.

On the other hand, you could say that about almost all the other nations currently playing in the Rugby League World Cup.

I'll give it to you there. The Kookaburras have a very impressive record.

Congrats to the Aussies.  I would have bet money on Honduras before the tie, based on recent form and quality alone.  But Australia got a great result in the first leg, and the Hondurans were never likely to win the return in Oz.  Had really hoped the Aussies would be joining us for the Alternative Facts World Cup in the US next summer.

actually, i meant that they had a record of choking.

At the Olympics, yes. For such a successful team, they couldn't get a gold until 2004... and that was there only one.

Wait, Chile and the Netherlands are out too, in addition to Italy, and the U.S.?!

Also, is Australia's team really nicknamed the Socceroos? That's adorable. I think they'll be my rooting interest next year with the shameful failure of the American team.

I wouldn't bother. Probably be knocked out in the first round.

Going for Peru

isn't everyone?

best scenario? peru win with a really dodgy decision in the last minute of overtime, after nz have had several legit goals disallowed.

one can dream.

may i suggest two things.

1. never call an aussie team adorable. for any reason. that is like the really hot girl calling you 'nice'.

2. under no circumstances ever suggest an aussie sporting team (or suggest to an aussie about anything) that they will be your "rooting interest". it means something very different here.
