Some of us travel a lot. Many of us have specialised interests. Others just want to get the best out of their tools. Some don't care. Ken just discovered "Apps" last week  ....."How come your phone has a calculator!" he asked

The best new App for "you" in 2017. What does it do? Link to it if you will. :ok:

I quite like the commsec app. And the Emirates app since I practically live on the plane these days.

No app for checking the height requirements before you go on an amusement park ride?

An app? To tell me “piss off you short prick, you can’t ride on that!”. No thanks.

For Havanathon, the Syd bunch used Splitwise App to work out who paid for what and what is the costs to each person. I invited them all, then had to tell them it is not Spam...... Uber got a lot of use this trip as well. Much better than calling taxis. Only called the taxi company, caused we needed a Maxi Cab to airport at the end.

Most Banking apps are quite good as well.

Can't do without WhatsApp for the group chats.

Home automation is a big thing these days. Apps are usually half of the equation because you need some kind of hardware to go with it but I have

WeMo light switches. App allows turning lights on and off or resetting outlet plugs.

Alexa. Accompanying app allows you to add things like WeMo switches to it. So when it's cold and you're curled up on the couch in winter you don't have to get up to turn off a light during movie night. Also adjusting my Nest thermostats with a short phrase.

Chamberlain. Garage door opener. Tells me remotely if my garage door is open. If I'm not home I can open the garage and let my buddy have at spare keys.

Nest thermostats. Set schedules. Change temps via the app from the seat of your pants anywhere. This is handy when you leave for the weekend and forget to change the schedule. Simply set your home to away mode via app  There's a backup to this. If the physical thermostats do not detect any motion within a preset amount of time it goes into away mode on its own.

Ring doorbell. Let's me know when the postman is dropping off my FOH shipments. Tongue in cheek here but I've witnessed smokes getting dropped off in mailbox. App sends live video stream or triggered by motion.

IFTTT... (If This Then That) Here's a quircky one. This thing plugs into different devices and has many cool uses. If you have location on in your phone, when you leave home it can turn off the WiFi on your cellphone. Arrive at home? Turns WiFi back on. You're garage door opens signaling your arrival and you can turn in specific lights in your home. I have little phrases programmed for my Nest via Alexa courtesy of IFTTT... Alexa it's cold down here. Sets my heat to 72 degrees. Alexa it's hot in here. Sets AC to 68 degrees. Lots of fun to be had with this one.

Couple of cool home automation apps. I'm sure Ken will enjoy these.

Cheers

Sensorpush. An app for reading temp and humidity wireless through bluetooth. It has a battery powered, match size sensor which transmits data and app reads and records data on your phone at 1 min intervals. Plots graphs, saves data as csv files and sends to your e-mail, too. There is an optional gateway to push data to ethernet so that you can check conditions inside your humidor from anywhere. Costs around 50 USD on amazon.
