If so, were you successful in creating anything that resembles your favorite Habanos?

I'm going to try to grow a few varieties this year, including Corojo 99.  I'm a complete novice at this, so it will be an adventure.

Any success or horror stories?

20 bucks on horror stories.  I'm also interested to hear this.  However, to answer your question, do any of the Dominican or Nicaraguan options available for sale "resemble your favorite Habanos?"  I'd say no, but that's just me.  And these guys know what they're doing.

Whoa... stiff rules for a formal penal colony!!!

You could argue that Australia continues to be a penal colony, based on our treatment of "illegal" refugees.
