I got some nice MC#4s awhile back, 2 months or so ago, on a 24:24. .......I have never tried them before. I find them quite bland, lacking flavor etc........almost just a tobacco flavour. I have tried 2 or 3, and all about the same......Would they get better by aging, or are these maybe a quite mild CC, that maybe I just don't care as much for?. I got some VR Famosos, and 2 of them have been GREAT. So far not feeling it. I was hoping for something smaller for a quick smoke.

To me the Monte profile is straight classic tobacco, maybe a rough woody, maybe a toasty, but more than anything just a straight forward tobacco taste.

Age other mellows the flavor but never changes it for me....

For a short fun stick try the San Cristobal El Princepe or the Bolivar Corona Jr.

Funny though, I have some #2s and I don't find them at all similar

Remember the Monty 4 is like the second most produced stick in Havana. So there may be some lack luster boxes and then others that blow you away.

True but these are 24:24, so I would assume they are better than a lot? I guess I'll probably leave them for atleast 6 months and try again....the collection is getting bigger ,so don't have to smoke them ;)

All from the same factories my friend. Rob just didn't let us buy crap. Didn't mean the blend will be perfect that day. Remember, man made.

I would give them some time. I got a box from 12:12/24:24 and they were awful for about 2 years. In late 2016 they finally came around and are great now

Ok good, thanks......good excuse to buy more in the meantime......lol

I love me some Monte 4s. They are pretty straight forward. I get tobacco, light coffee, and a little bit of creamy smoke from it. They're my go to stick but I'm about to run out and I'm forcing myself to branch out and get outside of my comfort zone. There's gotta be something else out there around that price range. besides the BPC.

In my humidor, they're not aging cigars past a few months to even them out or if I go deep on a couple boxes. They're everyday smoking cigars. I save space for larger sticks to age but that's just me. PCs are for smoking!

In my very novice opinion, I have noticed the darker oily Cuban wrappers take longer to smooth out and generally age better. They don't taste that good rott. Most of the stuff labeled PSP/HQ seem to be darker oily wrappers. On the other hand, the lighter wrapper stuff smoke very well after quick acclimation in the humidor. This is a bit of generalization and of course palates vary, so it may be different for others.

I buy the PSP/HQ stuff to age and expect them to be really good down the road a few years. For smoke now cigars I try to pick up lighter wrappers or specific brands I know I like.

Give them some time. I haven't had too many Monte 4s but to me they are all brown sugar, toasted tobacco, cocoa and cream. Be careful though even if they open brilliantly i've found that without enough age they'll turn into an awful bitter mess in the back half.

Got some montes #4 years ago they were bland and just straight tobacco flavor,  smoked a few but left the rest untouched for a few years until A couple years ago when I tried again I was blown away, just fantastic cigars;  maybe it was my palate that change but most likely it was the age on them.

I got a box of Monty 2 from a 24. Had one and was blah about it. Not at all what I remembered. Put them away for 4 months, had another one. It was ahaaa! That's the stuff! So yes...it can happen.

I have not had a lot of monte 4... a box or two... but the ones i have had are consistent... somewhat standard tobacco taste. A decent cigar that is in the background as you read a book, etc. Nothing that goes pow.... if i concentrate on flavors i can pick up cocoa... hint of spice maybe...

I find the monte 3 to be more rich in flavor... but maybe those are just inconsistencies inherent in box to box.

I've noticed that when I put a box away in the wineador it goes "dormant" for a few months. The taste is bland, or harsh. After I get past that the flavor improves quite dramatically, and it continues to improve as time goes on. But if I put a few sticks in my desktop, the amount of time they need is not nearly as long.

I don't really draw any conclusions on a cigar until around 18 months from box date. While I generally believe a cigar is never going to go from bad to great, I've heard too many stories over the last decade of cigars just springing to life after a few months or years. Haven't heard it too often with Monte (except the Especiales), as it is a marca that is usually very smokeable fresh, but I'd give it up to 18 months before I'd pass final judgment.

To the OP, I've had much more success with Monte 3 recently, and the Tubos, if that's something you'd consider buying. If you can find some Especiales and let them rest for at least 18 months, you'll really have an idea of how good Monte can be. The Petit Edmundos (avoid the Edmundos) are also fairly reliable. Montes can be outstanding cigars--in fact, perhaps the best cigar I've had in many years was a late 2013 or early 2014 Monte 4 from Rob. Only one in the box that was above a 90, and it was a solid 94-95 pointer. Flavor just pouring out of the thing, perfect burn, draw...amazing cigar. And I smoked this during the KY/WI Final Four NCAAB game on April 4, 2015 (yes, the cigar was that good I remember), so this cigar had less than 18 months on it.

The first box of cigars I ever purchased were MC Edmundo's(FEB15).  I smoked 3 or 4 of them within a month, and didn't like them at all. They were bland, and had very little flavour. Fast forward to mid 2016, and they're 1000 times better. They blew me away. Solitary confinement may be what they need.

What is the box code? If they are from recent production (under 18 months) then it's possible they are still melding (my term), and they may go soft or bitter for a period of time. This has happened to me several times. Of course, having a clean and ready palate also helps, so depending on what you ate or drank before or during your smoke could color your taste buds. But since you smoked 2 or 3 it is unlikely to be your palate... unless of course you burned out your taste buds with ghost pepper chillies or a blow torch :help:

As stated, the MC#4 is one of the most massively produced vitolas, and prone to inconsistencies, so it is possible the blend may be off. I'd give them a few months and try again. If they're still bad in a year, dump them on your unsuspecting friends :jester:
