Cigars like LGC Medaille D’Or No.4?

Recommended Posts

I recently tried some MDO No. 4 from a 2015 box.  I really liked the intensity and spice flavors it offered.  Surprising, really, for such a thin cigar.  Are there others in the current Habanos portfolio that offer similar flavors in a more conventional size? Thanks!

You're talking about pretty much the only model in an entire marca that's being regularly produced, so it's going to be hard to find anything similar. Kind of like asking, what other brand is most like LGC? Doesn't really work. Dip 2 would be the same way. Is there any other cigar in another brand like the Dip 2? Not really.

I do sympathize--the Palmitas vitola certainly isn't for everyone. The PLMC is a similar situation in that it's vitola that's become popular because there are so few alternatives. With a full lineup for Por Larranaga I doubt the Montecarlos would sell anywhere near what they do. The MdO4 is the same. I will smoke them because the quality is so high, but it really is thinner than I prefer. If it were still around, I would probably prefer the MdO No 1 to the 4. And of course, I prefer the No 2 to all of them.

The best we can hope for is that production on these resumes sooner than later. With what is shaping up to be an outstanding crop this year, I'm hopeful that many of the cigars that have been noticeably absent for the last few years return within the next 18-24 months.

As @NSXCIGAR pointed out, they have a unique flavor. I like the format, but can understand why others may not. The LGC MdO4 I believe is RG = 32 and I think it is a Palmita. It was not my first choice in that format, I rather preferred the Partagas SdC#3, which I suppose is a carlota with RG = 35, and slightly shorter than the LGC. However, the Partagas have been discontinued also, so it's not a viable alternative. I haven't had one in a very long time, but I think the RGPE (palma larga) with RG = 37 is another cigar in similar format that has some of the same flavors. The PLMC with RG = 33 and slightly longer (Deliciosos?) would be next, but not quite as spicy, and a bit more citrusy to my taste buds.

All these are very good cigars and quite unusual being so thin, but I find their flavors rich and intense, though not very complex, which makes them a great distraction for 30-40 minutes. I actually prefer them to marevas.

sadly there is nothing else like it, its like my favorite brand and so sad there is nothing left, at least I have enough 1,2 and 3 for a few years but after that wow I don't even want to think about it

I tend grab the cigars I want from my humi based an a vague sense of flavor profile and smoke time. Strength and Vitola aren't much of a consideration.

That said, I usually find myself debating between a MdO #4 and a QdO Corona. Maybe nurse a ERDM Demi Tasse if I think the time might be short.
