ElReyDel757 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Well, you guys were right. I started off with a tupperdor, but have already needed to upgrade to a 150 quart coolidor. I started off using 69 RH Boveda packs because I was using those for my Nicaraguan cigars. However, after much research on this site, I have now changed to the 62 RH Boveda packs, even though I had no issues at 69 RH. My question is, can I simply immediately change from 69 RH Boveda packs to 62 RH Boveda packs without harming my cigars? Will they experience any "shock" to this big RH adjustment? Is there anything else that I need to do, or simply swap the packs and I'm good to go?
jimsta10 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Nope dont stress. Just swap them over and monitor the RH. It will take time for RH to go down to the desired level. Just keep in mind the ratio of cigars to packs required. http://www.bovedainc.com/solutions/tobacco/tobacco-faq/ 1
JohnS Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 I have a long-term tupperdor with 65 rh packs for aging and a 'go-to' tupperdor with a 62 rh pack for smoking right now. I've had no problems transferring cigars from the long-term tupperdor to the 'go-to' one. I usually leave them in there for about a month to acclimatise to the subtle, yet notable difference in rh. 2
jcorona Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 It is commonly accepted that rh drops about 1% per week. In your case, going from 69 to 62 would take approximately 7 weeks. The change is slow, so it should not adversely affect your sticks. As long as temp stays constant, it should be fine.
Lotusguy Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Cigars are way more hardy than people make them out to be. A 7% change is hardly a shock. Don't worry about it. Jcorona - what you call "commonly accepted" I have never heard of in my life. 2

We, myself included, worry so much about cigar storage that I laugh at myself sometimes. How many times has a cigar been subjected to extreme temperatures and RH levels before reaching our humidors? Think about buying from the Host. The cigar is rolled in non-climate controlled conditions, boxed, frozen, sent to the distributor, picked over by Rob, sent to his place, ordered by us (in my case, the U.S.), wrapped up, sent through the postal service, only to arrive a month after I placed the order. Let me know if I missed a step or two. An adjustment of 10-15% RH will not kill the cigar if what has been done to it prior to you getting it didn't. Just give them time to acclimate. Personally, I throw new boxes in the Aristocrat and leave them for six months. Your RH may change over a few weeks, but how long does it take for that to get into every box and every cigar at the bottom of those boxes? I know, I'm a little extreme. 3
